The second domino in the chain fell today when longtime pitching coach Robert LaLoosh officially informed Yellow Springs officials that he would not be returning to his position. “It’s been a very good run,” he said in a video released this evening, “but today I called Bret (manager Bret Richards) and Ron (GM Ron Collins) to say I wouldn’t be back.”
LaLoosh has been with the team since 2029, arriving from Barcelona. Rumors circulated even back then that he had been hired simply to appease youthful superstar Lawrence Columbus LaLoosh, but the elder soon exhibited his ability to turn uncertain pitchers into valuable pieces. Earlier speculation was that he was considered an heir apparent for the head job when Richards was done, but some within the team’s front office are suggesting that Collins was worried about that shift and was feeling pressure from fans to try something different.
“Someone’s gotta go, and the GM usually doesn’t fire the GM,” as one fan said after hearing the news.
IMPACT ON CRASH DECISION?
The immediate question on most fan’s minds are whether this decision is a harbinger of Crash LaLoosh’s opt-out decision. The three-time Nebraska winner was erratic at times this season, but threw a pair of solid games in the playoffs and finished with an 18-7 record to go with his 3.70 ERA. His 226 innings pitched nearly matched last year’s career high 230. At question is whether he will take his $16.5M option and return to his career-long team to continue his quest to 200 wins, or whether he will dip his toes into the free agency pool.
Who the pitching coach is would presumably sway that decision, and right now the only thing that can be said with certainty is that it won’t be Robert LaLoosh.
