2054.1: Sources: Moreno Agrees to Extension

Post by Rubaboo » Tue Feb 07, 2023 9:41 am

The corpse of the 2053 season has barely begun to cool but BBA GMs are already digging into the offseason, prepping for 2054. After a disappointing loss in 2053 Championship Series, the Aztec front office has turned the page to 2054 and has gotten to work by reportedly checking off one of their biggest offseason boxes, keeping Aztec lifer Fernando Moreno in the building.

The deal is reportedly a 4 year pact with an AAV of $12M. The 4th year is a club option with a sizeable buyout. Moreno will have full no-trade protection and has been promised a spot in the starting lineup throughout the life of the contract.

Moreno was superb in 2053, even by the lofty standards he has set over his career, as he set personal best numbers in batting average (.335), slugging (.533), OPS (.924), OPS+ (147), and WAR (6.5). After spending much of the season asking for a significant raise, Moreno came back to the table in the offseason with a new mindset, and compromised with management on his salary demands slightly in order to stick with the franchise.

That Moreno is a franchise legend is no doubt. He already tops the Mexico City career leaderboards in Runs Scored (1456), Hits (2826), Total Bases (4334), and Doubles (604). He should, if he can stay healthy and effective, overtake the following categories as well: WAR (3 behind 1st), Games Played (145 behind 1st), ABs (179 behind 1st), and Singles (28 behind 1st). RBIs (195 behind 1st) would be within reach if the team continues to play well around him as well.

Nothing is signed and finalized yet but news of Moreno staying on will very much help brighten the mood at Aztec HQ. Moreno is a beloved character in Mexico City and his chances of finishing as a one franchise player increase significantly if he signs on for 3-4 more seasons.

"We can't comment on deals that aren't official but Fernando knows how we feel about him," said Mexico City GM Fred Holmes, "We'd love him to stay here for his whole career. He's already a legend in this building. He's going to be the last player to wear #8 in this organization. We hope he stays forever. We're gonna do what we have to do to keep him here until he retires."
