2053.3: Frontier Champs

Post by Rubaboo » Mon Jan 30, 2023 9:20 am

The first real seasonal goals for the Aztecs have been completed.

The team clinched the Frontier Division crown, as well as the #1 seed in the JL in the final week of the season, posting 100 wins and checking off the first couple goals on their season checklist for 2053.

Mexico City and Las Vegas spent the early part of the season battling back and forth, trading the divison lead back and forth for the first handful of sims before Vegas took the lead in Sim 4. The Hustlers' strong start would keep them in the lead for more than a month but the Aztecs were consistent and relentless, passing the Hustlers during Sim 10 and holding the lead until the end of the season. Rocky Mountain emerged a little later in the season, after a number of transactions to work out the kinks, and dragged Vegas back a bit, overtaking them in August to assert themselves as the main challengers for the Frontier crown. The battle for second took it's toll on the challengers, however, as Mexico City opened the gap to a season largest number of 7 in September, finally getting a little breathing room to rest a few players and turn an eye to the playoffs.

The Aztecs couldn't truly relax though, as Charm City spent the season playing good baseball and was firmly in the running for the JL's #1 seed all the way to the end. At the end of the day, though, the Aztecs were able to hold on there as well, getting to 100 wins and besting the Jimmies by 1 game to take the JL crown as well.

Aztec GM Fred Holmes on the team's regular season accomplishments, "Obviously we're proud to win the Frontier and claim the #1 seed. Getting to the 100 win marker feels good as well but this team has bigger goals than those. The regular season is important and we'll take some time to reflect and celebrate but we've still got a long road ahead of us and that's where our focus is."

Focus will be important for the Aztecs, no doubt. The playoff bracket has shaped up in such a way that Mexico City will take the bye prepping to play the two teams they were battling with during the regular season, the Oysters and the Hustlers.
