The whirlwind 2053 season of Rainer Sheffer took yet another turn recently, as the veteran backstop was released by the Mexico City franchise on September 29th.
Sheffer started 2053 in Montreal, where he had signed in the offseason. He battled some nagging knocks with the Blazers but played well enough to attract some attention from buyers late in the summer, and the Blazers traded him to Rocky Mountain on August 4th. He spent 3 weeks in the mountains until the trade deadline. The Oysters traded him to Vancouver to get some salary relief and the Mounties flipped him almost immediately to Mexico City, where he was presumably insurance for the also oft-injured Roeloff Klooster. Sheffer, however, was reintroduced to the injury bug south of the border, picking up a small back injury and twisting his ankle in the first two weeks of September before suffering a moderate hip strain on the 23rd, ruling him out for 5 weeks or so. The Aztecs, instead of putting him on the IL and hoping he's return in the playoffs, acted quickly to release Sheffer, who spent just over a month with the franchise.
"We would have liked to keep Rainer in the building, obviously." said Aztec GM Fred Holmes after news broke of Sheffer's release, "He's proven himself to be a quality player when he's healthy and we liked him enough to send a couple guys to Vancouver to get him. It's unfortunate that he got hurt and, at the end of the day, we needed the salary relief to be able to make some roster adjustments for the last week or so of the season. We needed to give Ryan a break to deal with his back, we needed to get some arms up to deal with our scheduling logjam. It just needed to happen. We wish Rainer the best at his next stop."
Rumors about Sheffer's impact on the Aztec clubhouse had been swirling since he was acquired, Sheffer is reportedly a miserable teammate, but no sources around the team could confirm that his attitude was a factor in his release. By all accounts, the move was purely financial. Sheffer's release puts the spotlight firmly on the health of Klooster and puts German Velazquez back in the picture. Velazquez was very effective last season when deputizing for an injured Klooster, posting a .250/.357/.444 line in the postseason, leading to a 111 OPS+. The Aztecs will hope that Klooster is healthy in October this time around but is reportedly comfortable with Velazquez as a fill in option if necessary.

Scheffer was already scheduled to become a FA. I think the Aztecs ran into some cap issues and if he wasnt going to be able to play, was an easy one to let go.usnspecialist wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 12:13 pmAhh the Ole "spread the dead money over more years" trick. Very nice.

Re: 2053.2: Aztecs Release Sheffer
This. He was due to be an FA and I wasn't going to re-sign him. Cutting him took his $3M off the cap and let me call up more reinforcements to make sure I had enough dudes to make it to the end of the season without suffering any more attritional losses. It was the move that made the most sense to me.GoldenOne wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 12:53 pmScheffer was already scheduled to become a FA.
