2051.5: OOTP23 Broke Corfield and I Hate It
*Authors Note: This TN is fueled purely by emotional frustration. I did almost no research to justify my butthurt. Thank you for reading anyway.*
Dave Corfield. Mexico City uber-Ace. Until we switched to OOTP23. Now he's dog shit.
Ok, dramatic. Probably. But it's hard to ignore what the numbers are telling me. Corfield, over the first 4 and a half seasons of his career, was looking something like an inner circle Hall of Famer. I knew I had a very good chance of picking up a win every time he pitched, even with some very mediocre talent around him to start his career. He won two Nebraskas, won 24 games and an ERA title in 2050 while posting 9.3 WAR... then the switch happened and he's suddenly gone from a 2 and change FIP guy to a 'Slightly Above League Average' SP. Now, would it be foolish to project the rest of his career based off of an insane 2050? Absolutely. No one is saying he's Steve Nebraska reincarnated. But to go from a career of excellence to posing an ERA north of 4 with a FIP more than a full run higher than his next worse season seems a little extreme. And don't even get me started on the playoffs. After the high of beating Vegas (a series in which he had one good start and one very bad one) to go into the New Orleans series with genuine excitement and have him give up 14 runs in 8 innings? There's a legit argument that he's the goat of that series. Now, New Orleans is not a normal team, they've always been powered by some sort of voodoo magic that eminates like an evil miasma from their GM, but Corfield was the worst pitcher in that series. Unacceptable. An 8.41 ERA across 4 starts? Hideous. There's no shame in losing to New Orleans, who was probably the best team in the league this season but Corfield didn't even give us a chance.
Ok, now that I'm done venting (probably) I can look around the league and see that strikeouts are way down overall. Pitchers across the league generally had to find ways to get guys out without fanning them. Maybe Corfield's BABIP was high? Hmm... No. .296 this year. Substantially lower than his .310 from his uber season last year. He gave up way more homers and more hits, which is obviously not going to help his numbers, but not anything crazy, so what gives?
At the end of the day, is this just an emotional rant, triggered by a playoff letdown that I'm taking out on a player that I have to decide if I'm going to pony up a 9 figure extension for next season? Yes, yes it is. Under normal circumstances, I'd chalk it up to a one year swoon and move on but these are abnormal circumstances around a player who went from elite to frighteningly normal this year. A year that I was again charging hard to try to win it all before I have to potentially lay out something north of $20M a season for Corfield be the face of my franchise. I hate inconsistency and I hate uncertainty. This embodies both of those big time. I am going to pay Corfield. Period. I traded Enrique Gomez and still regret doing that. I've already spent PP on Corfield, prepping for this extension. Maybe at the end of the day his 2051 performance ends up being a good thing because he shaves a couple mil a year off his ask. Maybe we all laugh about this during our multiple championship parades and at his hall of fame induction. Maybe he keeps performing at this level and I sink my franchise with what ends up being a hideous extension. No pressure.

Maybe he's just like Clayton Kershaw when it comes to playoffs. But yes, very frustrating.

Re: 2051.5: OOTP23 Broke Corfield and I Hate It
From 2048 to 2050 there were at least 5 pitchers with a K% of 30+. Corfield did it in '49 and '50 while just missing it in '48 with 29.7 K%.

Re: 2051.5: OOTP23 Broke Corfield and I Hate It
He was still 3rd in strikeouts overall and 5th in K/9 so it's not like his stuff is irrelevant or anything, I'm just not exactly sure how to diagnose exactly what his issue was aside from 'he was worse' and that terrifies me when I consider the prospect of paying him.

Re: 2051.5: OOTP23 Broke Corfield and I Hate It
I have a theory that pitcher down years can often come from the previous seasons workload. Corfield threw over 250 innings in 2050 including spring training and playoffs. Then close to the same in 2051 where he progressively got worse as the season rolled on.
I have no clue if this would go by innings or pitches. I see Corfield was 4th in total pitches for regular season this year not including playoffs or spring. Maybe his arm is just tired.

As part of a fun project I am working on I have the average league stats for every season from 1995-2051. I will look and see if there was a drop (and how much).Dington wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 12:07 pmBut all pitcher K rates were down.ae37jr wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 9:25 amI have a theory that pitcher down years can often come from the previous seasons workload. Re: 2051.5: OOTP23 Broke Corfield and I Hate It
My staff, which was UNCHANGED from 2050 to 2051, allowed 300 more runs and struck out 500 less guys. I don't think the game broke Corfield. But it broke pitching all together.
It was mentioned earlier about how the Nebraska Winner's WAR was way lower than normal. Considering the playing field still seems even across the board, it's just changing how we view our pitchers I think. It does seem though that average hitters were made really good while pitchers were brought down a few notches.
