2050.3: Mexico City Uncomfortable as Favorite?

Post by Rubaboo » Sun May 08, 2022 11:59 am

A recent poll of GMs around the league has revealed that the important BBA figures expect the Aztecs to handle business against the Atlantic City Gamblers in the upcoming JL Cartwright series. The respondents all indicated that they expect Mexico City to advance. The leaders within the Aztec facility, however, are pumping the brakes on that chatter a bit. Aztec GM Fred Holmes had this to say when asked about the poll recently:

"I don't buy that we should be heavily favored. Atlantic City is a good club. They can pitch, they can hit. They play very solid D. They definitely belong here. They also just eliminated Las Vegas. You don't do that if you're not a great club. We struggled with them this season, went 3-3 if I'm not mistaken. I expect this to be a grind."

Despite his deflection of league-wide affection, the Aztec GM did, reportedly, vote for his own squad to advance. When asked about how he voted, he had this to say:

"Of course I picked us! I love this group, I have all season. That's part of the reason I didn't push all of our prospect capital into the middle at the deadline. I believe in this team. There's all this BS negative self-chatter around the league during playoff time, reverse jinxing and whatnot, it never makes sense to me. If you, as a GM, dislike your team that much, what the hell are you even doing? You built the thing! I picked us because I believe in us. I'll always pick us."

History will indicate that the Aztecs have much preferred the plucky underdog role throughout Holmes' tenure as GM. As heavy favorites just last season against New Orleans the team lost the Geoghegan Round in 4. The 2036 Geoghegan round will also be a cautionary tale to any Aztec who dares consider themselves favorites. The 'slightly under the radar' role is one this franchise is comfortable with and one that they embrace. With only 4 teams remaining though, there's nowhere to hide, and the league has taken notice of Mexico City's strong play of late. Holmes would finish by trying to throw a bit of a wet blanket on the hype:

"We're playing our best ball of the season at the right time but 7 games is a miniscule sample size for baseball. You can find 7 game stat blocks that could convince you of literally anything. We're playing really well but Atlantic City is another good team. We're on a good streak but we're not looking back, we're looking ahead. 99 regular season wins don't matter right now. 7 previous playoff wins don't matter right now. The only thing that matters is the Gamblers. We're excited by the challenge and we're gonna be ready to play ball."

I've actually had this before. Glad I tried it, wouldn't put it in the normal rotation.
