2048.5: Azecs to Retain Coaching Staff

Post by Rubaboo » Mon Nov 08, 2021 10:26 pm

Since the Aztecs limped to the end of a painful 2048, there have been rumors swirling about whether the coaching staff would get another crack at it in 2049. There is no doubt that manager Ben McLaughlin doesn't have a long list of fans amongst the pitching staff. He mostly leaves the managing of the arms to first year pitching coach Enrique Gomez, who didn't exactly shower himself in glory either this season. Even hitting coach Rafael Reyes, who was brought in by McLaughlin, can't escape scrutiny despite the work he did with the teams stars in 2048. While Zalapa, Haney, and Simpson thrived under Reyes' tutelage, the rookies that needed to have productive seasons, quite simply, didn't. Geauxinue was poor all season, Liu started miserably but rounded into form as the season went on.

Was this somehow an example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts? No. No it wasn't. The team was middling at best in most categories and finished 78-84. So why is there no inquisition? The organization seems very disappointed with the way that 2048 played out, and rightfully so. So why then will there be no coaching searches? No replacements? No calling up of the popular minor league manager to whip it all into shape? Well, despite starting 8-20 in April and playing .500 ball for the next 4 months, the attitude in the dressing room is mostly positive. The players all seem to enjoy playing for each other and for these coaches.

"There's no doubt these guys are going hard for this team, these fans," a source from within the team said, "The org is a little more willing to give the staff a pass because of the vibe in the building. It's working. There's a feeling that this group can keep the good feeling going and will hit the ground hard next season. They'd better make sure they do though because the leash will be short. Another 8 win April will have offices being cleaned out."

Is McLaughlin the right man for this job? The Aztec job is his first gig as a big league manager, and he's only had a couple seasons to grow into the role. Perhaps his third season will be the one that he starts to turn the corner and can push the players and coaches around him to be better. Perhaps Gomez will have more success molding this young staff into a successful one. Perhaps the old guys will stay young for another season. Perhaps this all just keeps going to shit and these guys are all looking for work by mid-May 2049. Time will tell, and it seems as though time is something that the Aztec staff has been allowed.
