2048.2: Pitching Review

Post by Rubaboo » Sat Nov 06, 2021 8:57 pm

2048 was a disappointing season in Mexico City, of this there can be no doubt. Looking to build on a 2047 that saw them in playoff contention until the final few days of the season, the Aztecs fell on their face out of the gate with an 8-20 April and never made up the ground, floundering to a 78-84 final record. So what went wrong? That is always a complicated question. On the pitching front, the answer is clear: no one on the staff stepped up to compliment Dave Corfield atop the Aztec rotation. Corfield was the only Aztec pitcher above 1.8 WAR in 2048. Corfield put up 5.7 WAR. Second place with that 1.8? Rookie reliever Vassilis Zorba. He took the chance he was given early in the year locked up the 8th inning role and moved into the closer slot when regular closer Manuel Cruz went down at the end of May and was on the shelf for 5 weeks. Zorba even moved to the rotation when rosters expanded, starting 3 games. Setup, closer, starter, Zorba had it under control. His final line for the season - 59 appearances, 3 GS, 5W, 1L, 11 SV, 80 IP, 1.80 ERA, 70K, 20BB, 1.8 WAR, 220 ERA+. Zorba is the clear winner of the First annual Pitcher of the Year Not Named Dave Corfield Award. Amongst others, Michael Sullivan had a decent rookie year in the middle of the rotation, despite a 11-14 record. Jeff Weber was fine at the back end of the rotation and actually led the team with 17 wins. Aside from those 4, it's rather bleak. It says something when Pat Lefebvre joins the team in September, appears in 4 games and finishes 6th in pitcher WAR for the season.

Outside of the SPs that had decent seasons it was mostly poor. The team finished 7th in starter ERA but was 12th or worse everywhere else. The bullpen was mostly a disaster, with several pieces added and removed as the season went on, and finished 16th in ERA. There will be some work to do reconstructing this staff before 2049.

The Successes:
Corfield - 32 GS, 11W, 12L, 198.1 IP, 246 K, 58 BB, 3.54 ERA, 2.84 FIP, 5.7 WAR, 112 ERA+
Zorba - 59 G, 3 GS, 5W, 1L, 11 SV, 80.0 IP, 70 K, 20 BB, 1.80 ERA, 2.80 FIP, 1.8 WAR, 220 ERA+
Weber - 30 GS, 17W, 8L, 211.1 IP, 108 K, 57 BB, 3.53 ERA, 4.62 FIP, 1.1 WAR, 112 ERA+

The Failures:
Jerry Pacy - 36 G, 25 GS, 6W, 10L, 166.0 IP, 102 K, 72 BB, 5.10 ERA, 5.08 FIP, -0.2 WAR, 78 ERA+ - Pacy has been solid in Mexico City but 2048 was a cliff season for him. With a TO after the season, Pacy will likely be looking for work this offseason.
Ricardo Moreno - 32 GS, 6W, 15L, 193.1 IP, 115 K, 87 BB, 5.21 ERA, 4.55 FIP, 1.2 WAR, 76 ERA+ - Moreno has never been spectacular but a poor showing in 2048 may have him in the 'pen when 2049 starts.
Ramon Mendoza - 50 G, 2W, 5L, 2 SV, 49.2 IP, 33K, 15 BB, 5.62 ERA, 6.33 FIP, -1.4 WAR, 71 ERA+ - Woof. The fact that this guy was in the majors all season is borderline negligence by yours truly. He'll probably get cut for spite and be great somewhere else.

Silver Linings?
Lefebvre - Good showing in a super small sample. He'll get a long look in spring training and will have a leg up on a back end rotation spot if he performs.
Quincy Bresnahan - Fireballing lefty reliver, pitched ok in September when he was called up. If he can figure out how to throw strikes he'll probably have a place.
