2047.3: The Corfield Conundrum

Post by Rubaboo » Tue Aug 03, 2021 3:25 pm

4 games left to play. 4 games left to decide the fate of your season. Then, with any amount of luck, the playoffs. The path forward is clear for the Aztecs; win 2 and you're in. New Orleans only has one game and can only hope to get to 89 wins. If Mexico City can split their last two games of the season, they'll see themselves in the postseason for the first time since... *shuffles papers* *checks notes* ...2042. With nothing official yet but an eye towards the second season, debate has been raging inside the Aztec offices on how to handle the starting rotation over the last 4 games and any debate around the rotation will, for the forseeable future, center around budding superstar Dave Corfield. Here's an outline of the current state of affairs:

Corfield last started on September 27th (2 days ago for your calendar inept MFers), a ridiculous 15k outing against the Spuds. His next turn in the rotation would come during the double header against Edmonton on October 1st. This presents a slight problem in that, if Corfield pitches on the last day of the season, he would likely be unavailable for at least games 1 and 2 of a potential Geoghegan Round matchup in the playoffs. This isn't ideal but neither is sitting Corfield down and then finishing the season 0-4 to miss the playoffs entirely.

The Aztec GM, for one, is downplaying the importance of the decision, "We have a number of guys that we feel confident sending out there for the big games we have coming up, which is why we didn't work to manage who was going when a few weeks ago. I'm not going to tip my hand, but I feel good about the plan we're putting together to get us in the best position to punch our ticket to the playoffs and to have success once we get there."

Sources inside the team indicate that the GM is strongly in favor of pulling Corfield out of his normal turn in the rotation to have him ready for game 1 of the playoffs, citing the team's position and number of games remaining. Manager Ben McLaughlin seems to favor the 'we haven't won anything until we've won it' approach, and favors using Corfield in his normal spot. It's a mild power struggle, but no one likes to hear about discord amongst the team leadership heading into the end of the season. Time will tell what the choice is, and whether it's the correct choice. For now, all we can do is speculate.

Still can't believe he fell to #7 in the draft. What a steal.

At the time he was rated a 55 for some reason.

Took him about a week to be one of the top ten rated pitchers in the BBA.

I remember him being rated much lower than his ratings suggested. Can't pay much attention to those OVR ratings.

There's no doubt that him being available to me when he was could potentially be a franchise altering moment. It certainly changed my trajectory in the short term at the very least.
