2046.3: Looking Ahead - Lineup

Post by Rubaboo » Sat May 01, 2021 9:14 pm

The best thing about a season that was still bad but somehow still exceeded expectations is that it's easy to quickly adjust focus to what's ahead. The Aztecs have a number of positions that have starters that are firmly entrenched. There are also a number of young guns waiting to kick in the door to take big league spots. Let's take a quick run though the position players and see who's locked in and who might be entering the picture for the first time.

C -
2046 Starter: Kyle Baker - 99 GS
Felipe Delgado - 63 GS
The Baker/Delgado combo was solid but unspectacular. These aren't guys that'll wow you but they get the job done.

Projected 2047 Starter: Baker/Delgado
If there's an obvious upgrade available, the Aztecs would be foolish not to look but to call this a priority would be incorrect.

1B -
2046 Starter: Jose Ayala - 53 GS
Manny Collazo - 109 GS
Ayala was given the early part of the season to establish himself as the starter at 1B for the Aztecs and failed to do so. It would appear as though he has ceded his chance for a starting gig going forward and maybe has put his long term roster spot in jeopardy. Collazo handled the transition from 3B to 1B without a hitch on his way to a 4.0 WAR campaign.

Projected 2047 Starter: Collazo(?)
Wild Card: Keith Kerfoot
Collazo will be starting somewhere for the Aztecs in 2047. Much of that depends on what happens around him. If Kerfoot can have a solid offseason and spring, he'll have a shot to stick either in the corner OF or at 1B for the 2047 campaign. This is also a spot that the Aztecs could be shopping in free agency. As it stands right at this moment, the 1B spot is very much up in the air.

2B -

2046 Starter: Jorge Aranda
Aranda, an import from Des Moines before the 2045 season, had a pretty good year in 2045 playing in the outfield. He struggled throughout 2046 while playing second. He was average defensively and below average at the plate, leaving the door open for him to be replaced if he can't find his stride again in 2047.

Projected 2047 Starter: Aranda
Wild Card: Zhao-hui Sung/Jalo Taitto
Aranda has the inside track here for sure, but Sung and Taitto both lurking if he struggles.

3B -
2046 Starter: Lucio Martinez - 111 GS
Manny Collazo - 51 GS
Martinez jumped into the lineup when Collazo shifted to 1B and performed as well as could be expected. He was average all around. One could wonder if Martinez would be better served as a utility player on a team with higher than .500 aspirations...

Projected 2047 Starter: Collazo/?
Wild Card: Isat Kasturirangan
Ideally, Martinez will shift to a bench role if the team shifts into a contention mode next season. Collazo could either shift back to 3B or stay at 1B next season. If the Aztecs don't make any consequential adds, Martinez and Kastururangan could have a shot at making the lineup out of camp in 2047.

SS -
2046 Starter: Jose Montano
Montano was a FA add before the season and performed fine at SS for the Aztecs, slightly below average across the board. This is an obvious upgrade spot for 2047.

Projected 2047 Starter: Ryan Geauxinue
Wild Card: Someone currently outside the organization
Geauxinue had an unfortunate injury this season shortly after being promoted to AAA but didn't seem to miss a beat and should be in line to compete for the starting gig at SS for 2047. Watch out for the Mexico City front office making an add here if they feel like they can compete in 2047, which would push Geauxinue to 2B or 3B most likely.

LF -
2046 Starter: Raul Herrera - 121 GS
Juan Rocha - 41 GS
Herrera was above average both offensively and defensively and should be back in the 2047 lineup. Rocha was ok, and should be back but mostly because his $2.2M arb estimate isn't inhibitive in any way. He could be a bench bat or platoon somewhere.

Projected 2047 Starter: Herrera and a platoon mate
Wild Card: Jiong Liu
Herrera has the inside track to be sure, but if Liu has a strong offseason working on his power it might be impossible for Aztec management to keep him out of the big league squad. Herrera will need a platoon mate, which at this point would be Rocha again unless another option presents itself.

CF -
2046 Starter: Casimiro Mouriz
Another upgrade priority. Mouriz was average at the plate but was an anchor defensively, posting a -8 ZR. Mouriz will not return in 2047 unless the Aztecs fail to make any sort of upgrade.

Projected 2047 Starter: ?
There's not an obvious candidate to pencil into a starting role at this point. There's really no one in the system. This will most likely have to be an outside add.

RF -
2046 Starter: Fernando Moreno
Fernando Moreno doing Fernando Moreno things. Nothing to see here.

Projected 2047 Starter: Moreno
Until Fernando Moreno stops doing Fernando Moreno things there is no reason to be concerned with the RF spot in the Aztec lineup.

DH -
2046 Starter: Jean-Francois Hamon
Hamon set a career high in OPS and played pretty well. He can't play against lefties and will need a platoon partner but he should be around in 2047 again.

Projected 2047 Starter: Hamon
Hamon and a right will hold this spot down in 2047 unless something dramatic happens.
