2046.1: Mexico City Welcomes Back Estrada

Post by Rubaboo » Thu Feb 11, 2021 8:47 am

Breaking news out of the Aztec front office today as the team has announced it has brought back recently retired former player Jose Estrada, hiring him as a minor league hitting coach. Estrada will cut his coaching teeth with the club's rookie league affiliate in Castroville, California.

"We are beyond thrilled to bring Jose back into the fold as a minor league coach." Aztec GM Fred Holmes said in an introductory news conference. "You look at a guy with his pedigree, between being our franchise home run and RBI leader and his trajectory through our minor league system, and I can't think of anyone I'd rather have instructing the next generation of Aztec hitters."

Estrada famously spent only a single year in the Mexico City minor league system, he was put on the 2027 FPL squad, where he completely blew away expectations, and then spent 50 games in SA, 54 in A, 35 in AA and 68 in AAA in 2028 as a 20 year old. He made the BBA squad in 2029 and never played another inning in the minor leagues. He played 11 seasons with the Aztecs before mercenary stints in San Antonio and Seattle, then finished his illustrious career in the UMEBA with 3 years in Beirut. Estrada ranks among Aztec career leaders in the following categories: SLG % (3rd [.531]), OPS (8th [.872]), WAR (9th [40.5]), Games Played (7th [1760]), ABs (6th [6893]), Runs (7th [1037]), Hits (7th [2029]), Total Bases (3rd [3662]), Doubles (9th [291]), Home Runs (1st [424]), RBI (1st [1255]).

Estrada had the following to say - "I'm very excited to be back with Mexico City. I had some great years here and I'm ready to start giving back to the club and putting my stamp on some of the next wave of great Aztec hitters. I'm thankful for the opportunity. Their scouting department pulled me out of the park in Santiago and gave me the tools to fulfill my potential, I'm forever in their debt for that."
