2045.5: The Newly Departed

Post by Rubaboo » Tue Feb 02, 2021 10:12 am

The 2045 Aztecs were not a successful team on the field, no matter how you slice it. The team finished a game short of 100 losses and finished above only moribund El Paso in the Frontier division. The paper side of things, however, is a much different story, if that's what you're in to. The team will finish almost $20M to the good on the financial side and has all of it's key players under team control for the next several seasons. The attritional churn of a league that has a salary cap will leave the Aztecs mostly unscathed this cycle, as the team stands to lose only 3 players, none of them important. Here's a look at the newest crop of soon to be former Aztecs:

RP - Derrick Falter
The veteran lefty was signed in the offseason to a tryout deal that became a $1.3M contract if he was put on the 40 man. The team activated him out of camp and he stuck on the roster all season. Falter wasn't a world beater by any means but he gave Mexico City another left option out of the bullpen that they desperately needed before the season. Falter would extend at his current rate, but with the direction the team is heading going into the offseason, Falter will be allowed to leave and try to find greener pastures for the last stages of his career.

Utility Player - Rovilson Cereza
Every team likes to have a guy like Cereza around, it would just be better to have one who hits better than Cereza. A do-anything player in the field with a bat that might as well be ethereal, Cereza bounced between AAA and the big league club since being a Rule 5 pick from New Orleans in 2041. The team was happy to have him available, and may try to re-sign him to a minor league deal this offseason.

P Juan Moran
A player who won't be missed from an organization depth standpoint. Moran was an IC signing and quickly made the leap to AAA once he was activated. Moran was always one of those 'Not quite bad enough to cut but not quite good enough to matter' players in the Mexico City system. Now, however, injuries and age will make him very expendable. Happy trails, friend.

No impactful losses for the Aztecs this offseason. The team should have money to spend in FA if it chooses to supplement a lackluster roster, or it can largely roll it back with the same roster and attempt to gut the franchise further. How the market shapes up will have a dramatic impact of the look of the 2046 team. Thankfully, whatever path Aztec management chooses to take will not be decided by players walking to the sunset of FA.
