2045.1: Second Half Goals

Post by Rubaboo » Wed Dec 30, 2020 8:44 pm

The dream is over for the 2045 Aztecs. With the team in last place in the Frontier and unloading their talent for futures, Mexico City fans have very little to look forward to on the field in the second half. The front office, however, has to remain active and engaged as the team presumably slogs towards a dismal finish. There are several objectives that the team needs to meet as a front office before the season ends:

Objective #1: Figure out Isworth's Future.
The team could go a number of different ways with current starting 2B Marvin Isworth. The Aztecs have had trade discussions with a number of different teams around the league about Isworth's availability and, with his contract set to expire at season's end, a trade would seem to be the most logical path for the team to traverse. Flying in the face of that logic, however, are rumors that the Mexico City front office and Isworth's camp have been lobbing numbers back and forth and that Isworth is beginning to come down from the $108M price point that he has been dug in at since last fall. Does Mexico City see Isworth as a foundational piece? If so, at what price? Does Isworth want to stick around through a rebuild period? All parties are tight lipped thus far, but it's a situation that bears monitoring.

Objective #2: Evaluate the Roster
Rocha, Hamon, AJ Mahoney, Ayala, Baker, Velez... the list goes on. All of these players are in their arbitration years or still minimum salary. All are still in their 20s. Is there talent here worth keeping around or is there a for sale sign hanging on the locker room door? Could Manny Collazo be traded? After a small flurry of deals offloading big league talent the team needs a concrete plan. A haphazard rebuild will almost assuredly end in disaster.

Objective #3: Get a Look at Young Pitching
The Aztecs have more than a dozen ML ready pitchers rated 45-50 by OSA who are 27 or under. Who amongst the herd stands out? Who has trade value and can be moved to alleviate the jam? Who just can't hang and the big league level? The team should spend the second half of 2045 rotating pitchers to get a look at everyone and see who fits where before the offseason.

Objective #4: Find Value
Inside the org. Outside the org. Waivers. Free agency. Rule 5. Trade for a reclamation project. One of the beauties of having a roster full of replaceable players is that it's pretty easy to replace them with upside guys. During the 2044-45 offseason, the team brought in Jorge Aranda on a change of scenery deal that has worked out well. Aranda earned a starting gig and an extension and has maybe edged his way into the 5 year plan. Hitting on a deal or two such as this can make transitional periods much smoother. A cautionary tale also exists from the same offseason in the form of Fernando Reyes. Being able to tell the difference between the Aranda deals and the Reyes deals can be a key to an accelerated rebuild timeline. Find value, hoard it.

The wheels in the bus go round and round.

MEX has had AZ solid run at competing. Full tear down, or soft rebuild?
