2044.6: 2045 Incoming Rookies

Post by Rubaboo » Tue Nov 10, 2020 10:15 pm

The Aztecs are not the pride of the BBA when it comes to impactful prospects. In fact, it seems at times as though the front office's plan is to acquire as many Quad A style players as possible with the goal of winning AAA championships. While this has been a successful endeavor for the last decade or so in Los Cabos, it has not translated to success in Mexico City. Will 2045 begin to turn the tables a bit on this rhetoric? There does seem to be some help waiting in the wings. No saviors necessarily, but guys who could translate to effective BBA players on league minimum salary. Let's check them out.

OF Raul Herrera
2044 Stat Line (AAA): .312/.407/.556, 40 2B, 24 HR, 86 RBI, 170 WRC+, 5.9 WAR

Herrera was a wrecking machine in AAA in 2044, but will that equate to a roster spot and BBA success in 2045? To say that the Aztec LF platoon inspires fear in opponents would be... false... but the combination of Hamon and Rocha should perform better based on their ratings, shouldn't they? And is Herrera actually a better player? Is Herrera any better than the half dozen guys that every team has in AAA with the same ratings profile? Unless something changes, odds are good that Herrera will probably begin 2045 in AAA again. He's only 20 and won't need to be on the 40 man roster but the team will be quick to promote him if there's an injury or an obvious need for improvement.

P Ed Lynch
2044 Stat Line (AAA): 23 GS, 7-4, 104.0 IP, 2.68 ERA, 2.42 FIP, 132 K, 27 BB, 60 FIP-, 3.6 WAR.

Is Lynch a starter or a reliever? He has the stamina to start, and the success of Shinsaku Ine in the Aztec rotation shows that the organization isn't afraid of a 5 rated 3rd pitch. The major knock on Lynch is his injury history. He missed 5 weeks of 2044 with a strained forearm and apparently has some sort of chronic finger blister problem? The Aztecs are already trying to nurse along two injury prone starters in AJ Mahoney and Kusuma Djojohadiksumo, so it would seem likely that if Lynch makes the BBA squad next spring, he'll do so as a bullpen arm.

P Brady Miller
2044 Stat Line (AAA): 29 GS, 10-10, 150.0, 3.84 ERA, 4.54 FIP, 72 K, 36, 113 FIP-, 1.0 WAR

Miller's ratings have come in nicely, but his AAA numbers weren't overpowering enough to inspire a huge amount of confidence in his ability to succeed in a BBA staff in 2045. He has an outside shot of making the roster but will probably be plying his trade in Los Cabos until the inevitable Mahoney or Djojo injury.

Shallow prospect depth means that the Aztecs will need to be proactive looking for depth and upgrades in FA if they want to have a chance to compete in a tough division in 2045. The AA cupboard is largely bare as well, leaving fans to wonder if the current window of borderline contention is closing or closed. The team will have its work cut out for it over the next few weeks.
