2044.4: Upcoming Departures: The FA List

Post by Rubaboo » Tue Nov 10, 2020 9:12 pm

The 2044 season is in the books, and it's time for the BBA to begin to turn its collective eyes to the offseason. Before coaches and GMs around the league can start courting players who have recently become unattached, however, it's always a good thing to secure the home front. The Aztecs have some business to get done on that front before the offseason begins in earnest. The first, and easiest, place to start is usually with potential FAs. Most of the players who will be staying put with their current clubs have re-upped, meaning that folks who are due to become FAs are going to become FAs. The Aztecs have three such players, in Dan Forsyth, Anastasio Lopez, and Sylvian Van Noord.

Upcoming FA, DH Anastasio Lopez
Age: 27
2044 Stat line: .284/.341/.803, 25 2B, 14 HR, 45 RBI, 116 WRC+, 1.3 WAR
2044 Contract: $11,092,562 (Final Arb Year)

Lopez, a former 2nd round pick by Mexico City, has been a fixture in the DH slot for the Aztecs since 2039. He's got the ratings and the makeup of a solid strong side DH platooner and for the most part, he's fit the bill. At least in odd numbered years. Examine, if you will, the following numbers:
2039 - 135 WRC+, 3.3 WAR
2040 - 113 WRC+, 1.1 WAR
2041 - 159 WRC+, 4.5 WAR
2042 - 119 WRC+, 1.6 WAR
2043 - 164 WRC+, 4.0 WAR
2044 - 116 WRC+, 1.3 WAR
This is a thing. Lopez is an extremely solid hitter in odd numbered years and just a slightly above average one in even numbered years. This caused the team a bit of hesitation in discussions with Lopez early in the year on an extension. Lopez's camp was asking for real money when the season started, like north of $20M. His performance at the plate undermined his demand however and they quickly went to a 'We're going to test FA stance' and have stuck with that the rest of the way. Aztec management has been interested in bringing him back all along. He's a fan favorite and for a team in desperate need of some offensive pop, you can maybe overpay a bit for a player you know. Lopez seems like he will be getting his wish and hitting FA. Maybe he would be smart to seek a one year, decent money deal in hopes of hitting another 4+ WAR campaign and cashing in after 2045.

Upcoming FA, SP Dan Forsyth
Age: 30
2044 Stat Line: 30 GS, 12-13, 179.2 IP, 4.61 ERA, 4.97 FIP, 112K, 29 BB, 118 FIP-, 0.8 WAR
2044 Contract: $1.3M (Final Arb Year)

Forsyth, a 2034 Round 2 pick, started his career as a mid-rotation potential guy with a chance at being a #2. He was never quite able to reach those heights though, as a string of nagging injuries sapped some of his potential. He's now settled in as a back-end inning eater, which is something that every team could use. He'd be re-signed already probably, but his demands are in the $6.5M neighborhood for 3 years which is a bit much for a 5 FIP guy. He'll be on the Aztec radar during FA but if another team comes with a real money offer he would be dumb to not take it.

Upcoming FA, 1B Silvian Van Noord
Age: 26
2044 Stat Line: .291/.365/.581, 4 2B, 7 HR, 17 RBI, 156 WRC+, .9 WAR (44 G in AAA)

Van Noord has been one of the legion of Quad A bats that hang on the fringes in the BBA. He impressed during a September stint in 2043 but was relegated back to AAA when the team acquired Terada to play 1B for the 2044 season. He's turned down a minor league extension, and rightfully so perhaps, and will seek greener pastures in the FA market. Maybe he has a good spring and catches on as a backup 1B/DH/pinch hitter somewhere?
