2044.2: First Half Devastating Disappointments

Post by Rubaboo » Thu Oct 08, 2020 7:36 pm

The first half of 2044 is in the books. The Aztecs currently sit at 45-41, good for third place in the JL Frontier, trailing division leader Calgary by 10 games and 6 games back of second place San Antonio. The have been ups and downs through the first half, as there always are, but we're gonna take a second to discuss the downs. The scapegoats. The performances you don't bring up around polite company.

Devastating Disappointment #1: Anastasio Lopez
Oh boy, I was afraid of this... Mexico City GM Fred Holmes has long valued consistency in players, even over peak value at times. Lopez has been a stalwart in the middle of the Aztec lineup for quite a few seasons now..... Every other year. A classic yo-yo guy. His WAR totals from the last 6 seasons: 1.6, 3.3, 1.1, 4.5, 1.6, 4.0. This season he sits at 0.3 at the break, on pace for a staggeringly ugly 0.5. Not what you want to see out of a guy asking for a big boy extension.

Devastating Disappointment #2: AJ Mahoney
Surely a guy the Aztecs were hoping would be in the other TN. Alas, Mahoney called it a season after 46 innings in 2044, tearing his labrum in the second week of May. Since then he has lumped a point of stuff and a point of control. RIP buddy. In all seriousness, Mahoney is still a usable piece due to his leftiness but with as much as the Aztecs baby their starters it's certainly concerning to see Mahoney go down with serious injuries in back to back seasons. Hopefully 2045 will see him healthy and productive.

Devastating Disappointment #3: Dan Flores
Had a dump year in 2043, asked for a rather large extension which the team did not sign, allowing him to go to free agency. The Aztecs bring him back for much less than he was asking late in 2043, hoping their faith in him would set off a bounce back in 2044. It's looking like the Aztecs could not have been more wrong. Flores is currently batting .204/.239/.310, good for a .549 OPS and a -0.4 WAR. That OPS is 59 points worse than his dismal 2043. His glove has been very good, but when you're making $9.5M this season you've gotta give something with the bat... Please?
