2043.6: Don't Let the Door Hit You On the Way Out... Or Do...

2043 in Mexico City - A season of disappointment on both a macro and micro levels. Several players had down years, as they tend to, but a few guys that the team had come to rely on in seasons past continued a concerning downward trend and have perhaps outlived their usefulness and have played their last games in an Aztec uniform. The following players could be standing on the trapdoor with the noose around their neck:

RP Pedro Castillo - After posting back to back seasons north of 1 WAR as a reliever, Castillo has descended into garbage land at 30. The last two seasons have seen Castillo's role diminish, he pitched only 43 innings in 2043, and his numbers crater to the tune of 4.83 ERA in 2042 and 5.23 in 2043. The team holds a team option this offseason with a $3.5M buyout that the will almost certainly be executing.

SS Dashiell R. Faireborn - Faireborn has never been a great hitter, but he's got a decent batting eye and is elite defensively. Everyone can afford to play a number 9 hitter that is a shoo-in for a Zimmer at SS every season, right? That is a true statement, just not if it's directed at Faireborn. After winning 3 Zimmers in 5 years and with his career OBP hovering north of .350, the team awarded Faireborn with 6 year contract that pays him $5.5M annually. Before the ink on that deal was even dry, Faireborn promptly began shitting the bed and hasn't stopped since. His batting ratings completely abandoned him and his once vaunted glove went right with it. If Faireborn could keep his glove about him and be a super-sub of sorts he would still have value and to a team with no cap trouble the $5.5M number isn't problematic. But paying a dude $5.5M to sit on the bench and do nothing but bitch about how undervalued he is is untenable. Faireborn was put on waivers before the Landis and the team is working on moving money around to release him.

Honorable Mention:
DH Augie Plascencia - Augie was god-awful in 2043 and the team would be looking at a release situation but his contract is, mercifully, up this offseason.

Faireborn's dive is unhappy making.
