2043.5: Old Faces, New Places?

Post by Rubaboo » Tue Aug 18, 2020 8:55 pm

The 2043-44 offseason is rapidly approaching, and all eyes in Mexico City are on the status of several key players who are due contract extensions. The following players are in the 11th hour of their Aztec tenure and may be looking for new digs this offseason:

C Hsin Mei - Mei is in the last year of an extension he signed when he was traded from New Orleans to Mexico City. Mei performed like a star in his first two years south of the border, posting 4.6 and 5.6 WAR respectfully, but then limped to a 1.7 in year 3. Not what you want to see out of a player on a nine figure contract. He bounced back in year 4, to the tune of a 3.7 WAR and posted 2.4 and 2.5 in years 5 and 6. Mei is now 32 and it is clear the he is not the player he once was. The team has been interested in keeping him around but hasn't been willing to extend him at his current rate for another 6 years as he's been asking for most of the season. Reports indicate that his demands have gone down as the deadline looms but will the team commit significant resources to a player who's star is clearly waning? Chance of Resigning: 4 out of 10.

CF Dan Flores - Flores has been roaming CF for the Aztecs for 6 seasons and has done a damn fine job for the most part. Until this season. The 26 year old posted, by far, a career worst season in a contract year, all the while demanding a salary north of $16M on a 6 year extension. The team simply couldn't acquiesce to a demand of that nature, especially with the dropoff in Flores' numbers, both offensively and defensively. Reports from inside the front office say that the team has an interest in bringing Flores back but that he is refusing to budge on his asking price. Signs would seem to indicate that Flores will take his talents to the FA market, and that the team will continue to try to bring him back at a more palatable price. Chance of Resigning: 7 out of 10.

DH Augie Plascencia - Oh Augie... The Aztecs' team captain seems to have finally outlived his usefulness. He posted a dismal 2043 as a weak-side platoon DH and is reportedly quite upset with so little playing time. It would seem that a split would be best for both sides and that Augie may have a potential UMEBA career in his future. The team would only be interested in bringing him back on a near minimum, short term deal. Chance of Resigning: .5 out of 10.

SP Scotty Pendleton - Pendleton has been with the organization since he was drafted as a flamethrowing 16 year old. He is the last active Mexico City player who played for the Omaha Barnstormers. Although he's a reserved, every day kind of guy, there is a real argument to be made that he's the current 'Face of the Franchise'. He's second in franchise wins, fourth in pitcher WAR, first in career starts, first in innings pitched, first in strikeouts. He's a candidate for jersey retirement someday. And he wants out. The 33 year old wants to test free agency. The team will do everything in its power to make sure that Pendleton doesn't wear another uniform in his career, but at what cost? We'll all find out together I suppose... Chance of Resigning: 9.5 out of 10.
