2043.2: Starting Pitcher of the Year

Post by Rubaboo » Mon Aug 17, 2020 10:05 pm

2043 was an up and down year for the Aztecs, or, perhaps more appropriately, up THEN down. The team started hot before tapering off in the middle of the season and falling through the trapdoor during the last 2 months and missing the playoffs. It wasn't all doom and gloom, however, as the team finished 85-77 and had several bright spots amongst individual performers in the rotation.

The Aztecs, somewhat uncharacteristically, fielded a below average rotation, by the numbers, in 2043. Mexico City was 12th in SP ERA, posting a 4.43 to finish in the bottom third of the JL. The rotation was led by youngsters Shinsaku Ine and AJ Mahoney, until the latter went down with an injury on August 18th and seemingly took the whole team with him. Mahoney and Ine will seemingly be the pillars of the Aztec rotation for the forseeable future and are the two finalists for 2043's pitcher of the year award. The winner?

When in doubt, give the award to the guy who didn't get hurt during the pennant chase, right? Ine improved vastly on an impressive 2042 and established himself atop the pecking order in Mexico City in 2043. He followed the team down the toilet in September, which was discouraging, but it might be unreasonable to expect a 22 year old to keep the team afloat all on his own. Management is encouraged by his early season numbers despite his weak third pitch. An exciting player and one to keep an eye on as he matures as a BBA player.
