2041.6: Juan Rocha and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad 2041

Post by Rubaboo » Sun Mar 08, 2020 9:55 pm

2041 was a season of failures by a large number of measures in Mexico City. The team missed the playoffs despite being competitive and gained no ground on the divisional rivals they've been chasing now for 3 seasons, instead seemingly being content to savage the lesser opponents in the divisional basement and the JL Atlantic before losing on the final day of the season to the MASH unit called the Crawdads and hitting the links early. The team's front office failed to make any appreciable moves during the season that could have avoided this, instead sitting on their hands until mid-September for the most part despite pieces in an area of need moving at the deadline for pennies on the dollar (Justin Jackson, anyone?). Above these lesser sins though, lies the miasma that smothered the Aztec's 2041. A cloud of stink so vile that the infamous Mexico City monsoon season barely found its way through. That would be none other than deposed Aztec LF, Juan Rocha.

To say that Rocha was bad in 2041 would be an insult to bad things everywhere. His particular brand of bad could be collected, trademarked, and sold at a mid-range department store for $68 a bottle. We're talking off-brand grain alcohol bad. Used diaper filled with Indian food, turd covered in burnt hair, Bigfoot's dick, etc. You get it by now. To compound bad with more bad, the team's front office was content to let Rocha sit and struggle from opening day until July 27th. JULY FRICKIN' 27TH! If you see someone drowning slowly, you either pull them out of the water or go put your boot on their head. You don't just let them flounder indefinitely. The really insane thing about all of this is that Rocha was somehow almost worse in AAA than in the bigs. 2041 stats for your viewing pleasure:

2041 BBA: 83 G, 288 AB, .198/.247/.344, 17 2B, 2 3B, 7 HR, 42 RBI, 47 OPS+, -2.5 WAR
2041 RHML: 36 G, 148 AB, .169/.236/.365, 6 2B, 1 3B, 7 HR, 28 RBI, 51 OPS+, -0.7 WAR

Ridiculous amounts of hideous. Piles and piles of suck. The odd thing about all of this, besides the incredible extent of Rocha's incompetence, is that the team and the player both seem unperturbed by the bastardization of baseball they subjected us to for 2/3 of 2041.

Rocha on his season: "It was definitely a frustrating season. As a player, you want to be able to go out and do things that help your team win. I obviously struggled to do that this year but I learned alot that I can put to use in the future." On plans going forward: "I'm not gonna make any big changes, I've just gotta take it one day at a time. One inning at a time. One at-bat at a time. I'm planning to go home over the offseason and refocus so I can come back and earn my spot next year."

Aztec GM Fred Holmes on Rocha's 2041 train wreck: "We all believe in Juan and were hoping for better for him. He had a bit of a rough go of it this year. We all think very highly of him, which is why we used a R1 pick on him in 2037. He's got alot of potential, he just needs to believe in himself and the things he can do and he'll put it all together." On if anything off the field influenced Rocha's season: "I can't speak to that one way or another. I think he just had a hard time adjusting to the big games and bright lights. We had our guys in Cabo working with him on focus and concentration. If he can get his head right after this he'll do fine."

I have no idea what these guys were watching in 2041. Rocha was an abject disaster and should be buried in the minors, never to see the light of day until he can figure out how to dig his way out. I don't know if the Yips are a thing for hitters but good lord the guy looked hideous. Here's hoping the lack of panic from the team and the man himself is a positive sign, not a lack of concern for the team's success.

Are you sure Pedro Rocha wasn't taking his at-bats?

Not entirely, I suppose. Who pays that close of attention to these things? I guess I need to make sure I don't have players that share names going forward...
