2041.5 - Aztecs Reveal Retractable Roof Plans
It's fresh off the 2041 season. The games are done, the offseason hasn't started in earnest just yet but the Aztecs are still hard at work. There's a very large group of reporters assembled in the media pit, waiting on Aztec GM Fred Holmes to stride out to the podium and make an announcement. The team hasn't specified what, only releasing a statement claiming that there will be an announcement and a short Q&A session with the Mexico City GM about "a major undertaking involving stadium and facilities renovations and upgrades for the surrounding community." No one knows for sure what exactly this means but the whispers started quickly - the team will finally, FINALLY concede to the demands of the BBA and the other teams therein who have demanded that the team build a roof.
The Aztecs finished their season on October 7th. The rest of the league, minus those on the Aztecs' schedule, were done October 1st. The issues surrounding this from a playoff scheduling standpoint have been a consistent topic of conversation since the team started play in Mexico City. Aztec brass, especially the GM, have been loathe to acquiesce to the demands of the other teams in the league and rectify the rainout problem. Maybe this is the time.
Mexico City GM Fred Holmes walks brisquely to the podium and begins speaking immediately:
"Good morning. Thank you all for coming. I'll try to make this as brief as possible and take a few questions afterwards. We all know that the rain has been a topic of much bluster in front offices around the league. It has been here as well. We've spent alot of time collecting data, talking to players and coaches, and especially our wonderful fans. The results are exceedingly clear, especially in the fan engagement surveys, and cannot be ignored any more - we have put plans in place to begin a retractable roof project this offseason. Our expectation is that it will be completed before opening day and the project cost will be paid for by private funds and will not affect the ticket pricing for the fans. We cannot ignore what the fans, the people who pay all our bills, have asked for and we're going to give them what they want."
A murmur spreads through the herd of media assembled and a few members of the pool stand to start to ask questions. Holmes puts a hand up to silence the crowd and continues speaking.
"Please hold your questions for now, thank you. I'd just like to touch on the specifics of the project and the fan engagement piece. The fan surveys were mostly very encouraging. The fans feel that the environment is good, the facility, while not on the bleeding edge, is a quality one. The only place we saw consistent feedback was from fans in the luxury suites who consistently and repeatedly have said that they feel disconnected from the action on the field and from their fellow fans. After much internal debate and follow ups with a large number of said fans, we have contracted a local company to install retractable roofs on all of our luxury boxes."
A wave of confused chatter crescendos into an all out cacophony as everyone jumps up to ask questions. The Aztec GM seems to not notice, continuing to drone on.
"The boxes will have user controlled retracting roofs over the front half seating area of the box, all electronics and food service equipment will stay protected underneath the existing structure. The glass fronts will be replaced with plexi, that will also retract when the roof does. When the plexi retracts, a collapsible rail will move into its place to keep fans secure in their boxes. This will allow our fans in the boxes to enjoy the same environmental experience afforded to fans in our normal seating areas if they so choose."
Holmes finally seems to notice the pandemonium that has erupted in front of him and pauses, deciding whether to forego the rest of his speech and answer questions, apparently deciding to do so. The first reporter he points to asks the question that's #1 on everyone's list right this second: "So you're not building a roof on the staduim, but on the boxes so that fans can actually be in the rain?"
GM: "That's correct, yes. Next question?"
Reporter: "Why wouldn't you roof the stadium?"
GM: "Why would we? The fans love the rain. The players, once they adjust to it, love it as well. It's an important part of this region and an important part of our identity as a team. We as an organization have no desire to put a cap on our stadium."
Reporter: "What will the league have to say about this?"
GM: "Nothing? There's been chatter about the league mandating a roof for us but they really have no legal grounds to do that. The rain maybe results in a small scheduling shuffle but it's not dangerous for the players and we still play quality baseball in the wet weather. It shouldn't be a problem for the league."
Reporter: "What if the other teams pool up the funds to build a roof for you, would you not build one then?"
GM: "Look, we have no interest in a roof. None. There's been some whining and some chattering about crowd funding a roof for us. If they did that, we'd donate the money or use it to build low-income housing or something. We have literally no interest in a roof."
Reporter: "Do you feel at all like you're degrading the quality of the BBA game by allowing games to played in the conditions they're played in so frequently here?"
GM: "What? Were you even listening 2 minutes ago? We play quality ball here, we play quality ball on the road. The rain has no impact on our individual games. We're not building a roof, we like the rain. No further questions."
Holmes stalks away from the lectern, leaving a seething mass of media still looking for answers. The headlines, no doubt, will speak of the team doing wrong by the league, allowing the rain to be such a topic of conversation. That the team will be distracted by this story. Time will tell. For now, we know - no stadium roof, retractable luxury box roofs. What a time we live in.

Fred that was perfect. My first though when I saw the headline was "nooooo he gave in" and then my second thought was "I hope he's trolling us" and I was not let down.
An instant classic.
