2040.1: Mexico City Feeds the Expansion Beast

Post by Rubaboo » Mon Sep 16, 2019 10:27 am

The BBA Expansion Draft has been completed. The Portland Lumberjacks and Charlotte Cougars have plundered the low-hanging fruit from their fellow BBA franchises and have each put together a rag-tag bunch of has-beens and surplus-to-requirement type players in an effort to make some sort of commotion in the league in 2040. Some of the lowest hanging and rag-tag-iest of these players were plucked from the Aztecs, as Mexico City waved goodbye to three players with varying degrees of usefulness in CF Juan Valverde, "2B" Feitze Aalbers, and C Jose Alba. Let's get a brief rundown of each of these players:

Image
Juan Valverde
Drafted: Round 15, Pick 2 by the Charlotte Cougars
Valverde is a 22 year old OF/utility man. His OF glove is elite and, with training, should be an above average defender anywhere in the infield except SS where he might struggle a bit. His bat, however, will keep him from ever being a full-time ML contributor. He's young enough that there's still a sliver of hope that he can develop his bat a bit more, but realistic projections put him as a late inning sub/emergency fill-in/pinch runner type.

Image
Feitze Aalbers
Drafted: Round 29, Pick 1 by the Portland Lumberjacks
Aalbers is a bit of a man without a postion. He provides great leadership and his bat will be league average but his infield ratings leave much to be desired. Porland GM Chris Wilson has a history of punting defense a bit, so Aalbers has a shot to be Portland's 2B from day 1. The hope is that his small amount of ML time in 2039 showed he can be a scratch defender at the keystone, but a 5 error rating over a reasonable sample size will most likely prove untenable.

Jose Alba
Drafted: Round 30, Pick 1 by the Charlotte Cougars
Alba was minor league filler with the Aztecs and it's hard to imagine him being anything but with Charlotte. He just doesn't have the bat to stick at the BBA level. He'll call a great game and earn some Ks for developing pitchers with his excellent defensive ability but if he's in the majors there's a problem somewhere.

Aztec GM Fred Holmes on the expansion draft attrition:
"Look, no one likes to lose young players. Feitze, Juan, and Goose are all young guys that we would've loved to hang onto. In the grand scheme of things though, we didn't lose anyone important to our grand plan. We're fortunate enough here to have a younger team so we had the luxury of being able to use our protection slots on guys who are contributors right now without needing to agonize too much about the fringe guys. We didn't have contracts to dump, we didn't have quality guys being left out because of positional log jams. We got off easy compared to some of these teams."

The biggest loss in all of this is probably going to be the leadership of Aalbers. The Aztecs have struggled with their clubhouse over the last several seasons, despite success evidenced in playoff appearances and overall record. Former player and 2039 bench coach Bob Burke was just unceremoniously asked to hit the bricks, and the team is reportedly scrambling to make over its clubhouse environment by finding some veteran players with some leadership ability. Will the Aztecs feel the expansion draft loss perhaps more than anyone is letting on? We shall see. For now though, it looks like it'll be business as usual south of the border as Mexico City gears up for 2040.

Nobody left anyone with any offensive ability unprotected, unless he was being overpaid for that ability. Best we can hope to do for a few years is keep the ball in the park, play some good defense, and hope we can get just enough offense to win those 1-run games.

Yeah, I totally get it. Valverde was actually the one guy that I was hoping would fall through the cracks. It's tough building a team from scraps in a league with good, attentive GMs. I think we've proven that through 3 rounds of expansion now.

Yeah I'm hoping to shake that history and actually, you know, focus a little on defense here early on. Finding great defense is easier at this point in a franchise.

Yeah, I know you said that when I was on the Skype call. I just had to get that dig in there. It'll make me sad if you do focus more on the defensive side of things, I've been using your infield setups as a bullet point for my argument on why I like singles better than walks for a few seasons now. Gonna have to find another talking point I guess...

HAHA

And now that I think about it, Aalbers might have been a guy Recte started identifying as a draft pick later in the draft. When things got hectic it became just a "who's the easiest to take now and we'll sort the mess later"
