2039.3: Aztecs stand pat at the Deadline

Post by Rubaboo » Mon Aug 19, 2019 9:53 am

The trade deadline has come and gone. There were several very active squads and a few large deals consummated in the hours leading up to the cutoff. Despite a large number of rumors that circulated in throughout league sources, the Aztecs front office seemed to have taken deadline day off.

"We had a lot of conversations with alot of teams both about moving players in and out. We were as busy as anyone," Aztec GM Fred Holmes said on a conference call with reporters after the trade deadline had passed. "We just really felt that the available talent and the pricing on it was outside of the range we were comfortable in. Were there areas on our squad that we would've like to find reinforcements for? Absolutely. You need to weigh the benefits of adding with the costs of doing so, however, and we just didn't feel like the starting points of the conversations we had were in the ballpark for us."

The rumors surrounding the Aztecs were as numerous as the raindrops that fall on Mexico City every season: The Aztecs were in on Chris Kelly; Jose Estrada was going to be traded; Mexico City was going to acquire a number of bullpen arms; Gipper Kengos was moving; Mexico City was packing it up and trading everything that wasn't nailed down; no, they were pusing the chips in and going for it...

In the end, all the chatter was a red herring of sorts as the Aztecs stayed put, content to trot largely the same squad out that has made the playoffs three years running.

"Will we look back after the season ends and lament moves not made? It's possible. I feel like the odds are much better of regretting an overpay for a rental that doesn't end up being the missing piece though."
