Mexico City SP Julio Silva

News broke out of Mexico City today that SP Julio Silva, a pending free agent, has signed a 5 year extension with the Aztecs. The deal carries an annual value of $4.265M and has a guaranteed term of 3 years before 2 team options with buyouts of $1.3M and $2.3M.

"We are very pleased to keep Julio in the mix for the near future." said Aztec GM Fred Holmes, "With Julio's quality and the increasing scarcity in cost-effective pitching, a deal like this is exactly what we were looking for this season."

This contract is seemingly against the trend that has been carrying contract demands over the last few seasons, with players offering very little in the way of "home town discount" to their current employers with free agency looming. Silva's extension had one source in the league wondering "Why do players hate money?" Indeed, this extension's AAV represents a pay cut for Silva, who is making $4.8M in his last year of arb for 2039.

"Easy choice for me, they drafted me, they believe in me, and I love it here. I was more than happy to sign up to stay." said Silva about the extension, "now I can help get this team a Landis without having to worry about what's coming next year or the year after."

Silva has a 50-54 career record with a 4.3 ERA and a 4.4 FIP. He has played his entire career with the Aztecs after being drafted 18th overall in 2029. If he plays out the entire extension, he will be 31 when the deal expires.

I like it. Great deal for a guy who always gives his team a chance to win. (Although, it makes me kick myself for throwing money at Gracia right when I took over the team, instead of waiting like any sane person would have.)
