2039.1: Aztecs to retire Gomez's #64?

Post by Rubaboo » Mon Jun 10, 2019 9:25 am

Major news out of Madison this week as former Aztec Enrique Gomez announced his retirement from the BBA after struggling through 2038 with the Wolves. Shortly after Gomez's announcement went public, the following statement was released from the Mexico City front office:

The Mexico City Aztecs want to congratulate the legendary Enrique Gomez on his retirement. This is the end of an era in the BBA, as well as in Mexico City, Madison and Rockville, where Gomez excelled for many seasons. We have a tremendous amount of appreciation and respect for the contributions Enrique has made to our organization and to our league, and as such would love to honor a legend by declaring our 2039 home opener 'Enrique Gomez Day' and by raising #64 into the rafters of our building to hang there, unused, for the future. A fitting honor for a deserving player. Enrique, you are a legend and a class act, thank you.

The statement has since been removed from the team's official website, causing a whirlwind of speculation surrounding the relationship between the team, specifically its GM, and the future hall of famer. Aztec GM Fred Holmes is expected to hold a previously scheduled off-season press conference and will certainly have to face questions regarding the statement and its removal. Whether he will provide insight or not remains to be seen. One thing remains beyond a doubt, however; Gomez is an Omaha/Mexico City legend more than deserving of being honored by the team. What that honor will be, exactly, remains to be seen.

Controversy erupts.

I was hoping Gomez would sign something like a 20 day contract so he could get those last 11 MEX Ks he needs.
