The reaction in Mexico City when rookie CF Dan Flores was diagnosed with an oblique injury that would keep him out for a month was essentially a throwing of hands in the air and a head shake.
"Another week, another key guy on the shelf," said Aztec manager Jorge Acevedo, "We're not limping into the playoffs, we're riding the meat wagon in this year."
Indeed, the Aztecs have put their depth to the test this season in the field, losing key players in 3B Jerome Delage, OF Gipper Kengos and now Flores.
Aztec GM Fred Holmes had a slightly different take than most of the Aztec organization and their followers: "Losing Dan is terrible, obviously. He's a great young player, but Gipper is ready to go and will take his spot in CF. These are long seasons, you have to plan for guys to go down and you need to be able to have players who can step up and fill the holes that attrition chews in your lineup."
The part of this equation that no one in Mexico City seems to be in a particular hurry to address is the amount of playing time that will be asked of Ricardo Pena, who has struggled to adjust to the BBA game in his rookie year. Instead of slowly acclimating, Pena has actually managed to get worse since being thrust into a starting role with the outfield injuries, posting a .495 OPS in August and a .508 thus far in September. Look for opposing teams to pick on the struggling newbie the rest of the way as the Aztecs seem content to wring their hands and hope Flores can hurry back.

I mean... They are always running around on a wet field and playing 14 games in 5 days. Somebody is bound to get hurt.

Hey now. I haven't actually had THAT many rainouts this season. Vegas is the one with an October makeup game scheduled, not me. On that note, beat him in that game for me, would you?

I will do my best to play spoiler. But you might want to win enough games to avoid relying on that.
