2038.1: Estrada becomes Aztec homerun king

Post by Rubaboo » Mon Apr 22, 2019 2:44 pm

May 26th, 2038.

It was the bottom of the fifth inning, one out with a runner on first when Mexico City first baseman Jose Estrada strode into the batter's box. He squared up on the first pitch he saw from Charm City reliever Alfredo Sosa and deposited it 372 feet away over the wall. As the ball fell into the stands, a massive scramble ensued while fireworks blasted and the video board lit up congratulating Estrada on his 327th career homer. Estrada had just passed Omaha Barnstormer legend and BBA Hall of Famer Lance Pere for the all-time franchise lead in home runs. After the congratulatory graphic flashed, a camera panned to Pere, watching from a luxury box, who was on his feet with the other 23,580 fans who braved the rain in the second game of a double header with the Jimmies.

"Feels great. There's alot of history in this organization and I'm verry happy to be a part of it," said Estrada in a post game interview, "It was great to be able to meet and talk with Lance after the game. He's obviously a very important figure in this team's history and it's an honor to be mentioned in the same breath as a player like him."

Estrada, 30, is in his 10th season with the Omaha/Mexico City organization. He was initially discovered in the Dominican by an area scout and was considered to be organizational filler after he was signed but his career took a sharp upward trajectory after he played winter ball in 2027. He would spend 2028 blazing up the minor league ranks from A to AAA, and made his BBA debut on opening day in 2029, never looking back. His career numbers with the franchise: 1399 GP, .293/.339/.529, 1601 hits, 223 2B, 33 3B, 333 HR, 989 RBI, 32 WAR.

He's got a few more seasons left to add to it.

Washed up. Time to head to UMEBA. I’d find a spot for him...

He's been remarkably consistent, if not the superstar we thought he'd be early in his career.

There's that C-word I like to see in my players. I'll take 10 years of Estrada-type production over a super high 3 or 4 year peak and a sharp drop off any day.
