2035.4: Rain, Rain go away...

Post by Rubaboo » Sun Jul 08, 2018 9:18 pm

"Man, this is going to be an interesting month."

The understatement of the year came from Aztec manager Mark Bruner after Mexico City won the second game of a double header on June 8th against the Hunstville Phantoms. The team won both games, in fact, and after watching the first two games of a four game set get rained out it was great to see the team come out hitting on all cylinders.

Friday's double dip was a result of another of Mexico City's frequent summer storms. It's already the second time this season the team has seen multiple games of the same series rained out, the first being a series against the Seattle Storm that had games on the 10th and 11th cancelled, but this particular set of rainouts really puts the Aztecs in a scheduling bind. After Friday's deuce, the Phantoms and Aztecs will square off for a pair on Saturday as well. After that, the team has three against Atlantic City, the final makeup game from May with Seattle, then hosts the Spuds. A most welcome off day grants a small breather before the Aztecs have a stretch with 3 at Vancouver, 4 vs San Antonio, 3 at Jacksonville, 4 at New Orleans, 3 against Louisville and an off day before finishing the first half of the season playing 3 at Rockville. For you amateur schedulers at home, that means that Mexico City has only two scheduled off days, June 17th and July 4th, before the all-star break which equates to a whopping 30 games in 29 days including Friday's games.

"I guess its a good thing we're playing hot right now because this stretch could define our whole season." said Bruner "we've got a call in to our staff in AAA telling them to keep guys ready because we might need to shuffle some players around so we don't overwork anyone."

Aztec GM Fred Holmes dismissed the notion that the team would look to put a roof on the currently open air Ullamaliztli Field. "The wind and the rain are part of this region, we knew that when we located here. We built the stadium where we did knowing the weather would be a factor. The challenge from the weather is one that we accept and embrace. We will continue to persevere and use the scheduling fluidity to our advantage whenever we are able."

Whether the rainout induced schedule shuffle actually works to the advantage of the Aztecs remains to be seen but hopefully the team playing will will keep this stretch from becoming a slog.

"I just hope we have enough pitchers..." mumbled Bruner shuffling through lineup cards, "this is madness."
