2035.2: Aztecs grow 3 Spuds

Post by Rubaboo » Tue May 29, 2018 4:05 pm

The expansion draft list has been released and, as Aztec management suspected, the team sacrificed three of its players to the expansion process. GM Brett Schroeder of the Boise Spuds picked three players out of the Mexico City system to be part of the initial 35 seed potatoes of the Boise franchise. The following players are now part of the inaugural class of Spuds:

P Maxence Mace
Expansion Round 1, Pick #1

Why Mexico City left him unprotected:
The short answer: too many pitchers to protect. There were several high potential pitchers that needed protection, and Mace was the oldest. Mix in a semi-spotty track record and while management likes him, his spot on the list went to a younger player with more upside.

What was he for Mexico City:
A swing man. At 27 he still shows unfulfilled potential but he most likely is what he is at this point. A 9 Fastball complemented by a 6 Knuckle Curve and a 5 Change makes him essentially a one pitch pitcher. Velocity and stamina are good but he doesn't have enough currently to cut it as a full time big league starter for a contender.

What awaits him in Boise:
Probably a top three rotation slot. He's a high movement groundballer that fits that mold of what Brett likes to do on the mound. Plus, he's a guy that Brett drafted in Vancouver before trading him to me in Omaha. Mace will get every opportunity to be successful in Boise.

P Zhong-Qi Wan
Expansion Round 14, Pick #28

Why Mexico City left him unprotected:
Because you don't protect 24 year old AAAA utility men? Wan was signed as a defensive super sub prospect in 2030 and never bumped his potentials. He almost got cut a number of times last season. It was a surprise he was drafted at all.

What he was for Mexico City:
A fringe guy that would've been cut after the draft probably. He's got a great glove but his bat is terrible. It would have been hard to justify keeping him around at 25.

What awaits him in Boise:
I would guess a role as a AAA utility guy. He might see the majors depending on how the rest of the Boise roster shakes out but it's hard to see the Spuds not having a better option for his role.

P Jesus Enriquez
Expansion Round 21, Pick #41

Why Mexico City left him unprotected:
Enriquez has a bat that can probably play in the bigs for a bit although it's hard to see him having sustained success over a large sample size. He is a decent option as a utility man as he has good range both in the infield and outfield but his other fielding ratings leave something to be desired. He has some upside and was one of three players vying for the last protection slot but ultimately was left available.

What he was in Mexico City:
He was a very good AAAA player. He finished 3rd in Steve Garvey Jr. Award rankings for the best AAA bat in 2034 after a successful season playing mostly CF and 2B for the team's AAA affiliate in Los Cabos. The team was hopeful he would show some contact improvement and battle for an ML roster spot in 2035 but ultimately he will play in Boise this season.

What awaits him in Boise:
Probably a platoon starting spot somewhere. He's rangy enough to play CF or 2B but his bat is unplayable against LHP and his error numbers may be higher than Brett will like. Still though, he's got the overall batting ratings to be an interesting piece for an expansion franchise.
