2034.5: Destination: Cabo

The Mexico City organization made good on a promise to start restructuring its minor league system after the BBA team's relocation from Omaha to Mexico City by announcing today that the team's AAA affiliate that has been based in Halifax, Nova Scotia will be relocated to Los Cabos on the Baja Peninsula on the Pacific side of Mexico. The move drastically improves the travel situation for players traveling between the AAA and ML levels, reducing the mileage from almost 2700 to 735 miles, the difference between a flight of almost 9 hours and one that is just over 2 hours.

"We would first like the thank the city of Halifax for their hospitality over the last 38 seasons," said Aztecs GM Fred Holmes at the reveal conference. "We had a great deal of success, both as a team and with prospect development, in Canada but with the team's relocation to Mexico City the travel distance is just too great and we had to make a change to bring our teams closer together. Cabo offers us several advantages, ranging from weather to lifestyle for our players and we are very excited to begin our partnership with the city."

Holmes continued: "We chose the 'Corsairs' team name as a nod to the area's history as a safe haven for pirates in the area during the age of piracy. The risk of piracy and attacks on Spanish shipping resulted in the Spanish garrisoning the area and was one of the major causes of permanent settlements in the area. As a result, we felt paying homage to the privateer history of the area was fitting."

The team will play in a newly renovated facility, nicknamed The Crow's Nest, just off of Federal Highway 1, making it easily accessible to both locals and vacationers staying in the beachfront resorts in the Zona Hotelera.

The team leaves Halifax with a lifetime record of 2738-2850 with two 'The Big One' championships, one in 1995 and one in 2025, and 11 Washington Division championships. The Fighting Scots' exit also leaves the city of Halifax with no BBA afflilated teams just two seasons after having one BBA team in the Hawks, and one AAA team in the Fighting Scots.

The Aztecs organization declined to comment on the progress of further minor league reorganization, simply releasing a team statement saying that there are several other agreements in the works and that they are at varying levels of progress.
