2054.6: Options

Post by Rubaboo » Mon May 08, 2023 4:04 pm

The Aztecs roll into the offseason with an aging roster that is going to become more expensive for 2055 as guys age into contracts and through arbitration. That makes things like options critically important. GMing is a crystal ball business, and nothing makes that more apparent than offseason transactions, options included. The Aztecs have 4 players with team options whose fates are due to be decided shortly. Let's break it down and see who has options and the likelihood of them being in Mexico City for another season:

C Roelof Klooster
2055 Salary if Exercised: $8.5M
Klooster's good luck ran out after a couple of seasons in Mexico City, as he stuffered an April injury that kept him out for most of the season. Such is the deal with Klooster however. When he's healthy, he's among the best catchers in the league, and at 35 doesn't seem to be slowing down. Another tidbit for front office consideration: the organization has almost nothing at catcher behind Klooster. Velazquez has deputized admirably when needed but can't be a full-time backstop on a competing team. The Aztecs likely need to find more depth behind the dish and cutting Klooster loose won't help in that regard in any sense. Look for him to be manning the backstop spot whenever he is physically able in 2055.
Likely Outcome: The team picks up Klooster's option and looks for another option this offseason.

3B Alfredo Rosas
2055 Salary if Exercised: $8M
Rosas was one of the mercenaries that Mexico City brought in for 2054, continuing a recent trend for the organization. He was... mostly fine. Not super exciting but absolutely serviceable. His price tag for 2055 is $8M and it seems pretty likely that the team could decide to use that money on another position or another player who helps overhaul their defensive structure this offseason. Rosas could be brought back at a lower salary number as well but look for him to be in the FA pool this offseason.
Likely Outcome: Mexico City declines Rosas' option, sending him to FA.

LF Pablo Lara
2055 Salary if Exercised: $2.6M
Lara was a luxury signing and, despite having never played 1B before, logged a good amount of time there for the Aztecs in '54. He's still under 30, and cheap for 2055 while being an effective hitter who can play 1B and corner OF. All signs point to him being retained and possibly extended if his demand is reasonable.
Likely Outcome: Lara is retained.

C Philitis Tsafento
2055 Salary if Exercised: $2M
Tsafento was an 'Oh Shit' waiver claim after Klooster went down and the team whiffed on Shiplack in FA. He did his thing, bringing an above average glove and an invisible bat to the Aztec lineup. While his $2M salary is plenty affordable, his future is likely tied to whether the front office can pick up another, possibly younger option to take his spot. At the end of the day, his salary might help re-stock the bullpen or something. His fate will depend on other moves for sure.
Likely Outcome: Unknown.
