2050.6: Mexico City Options

Post by Rubaboo » Tue May 10, 2022 9:24 pm

The BBA grind never stops; never sleeps. The Aztecs were just eliminated from the post season but the front office staff are already planning for the offseason, looking to maintain and improve the roster for another run next season. The first step in the process is to decide on team options and try to predict player options. There's not much to cover for Mexico City this offseason. Most of the roster turnover that has become synonymous with Aztec offseasons over the last couple seasons was curtailed in 2050, as farmhands started to graduate to take the places that had been filled by mercenaries of late. That doesn't mean there are none, however. There are a handful of key contributors to Mexico City's recent success who have futures hanging in the balance. Haney, Moreno, and Normore are all out of guaranteed money. What the players and/or team decide to do with these players is the first step towards crafting the roster for opening day 2051.

Team Options

Image
C Quinton Lara
2050 Stats (MEX): .344/.413/.549, 7 HRs, 15 2B, 3.1 WAR, 165 OPS+ (52 Games)
Remaining Contract: $10M
Lara is an interesting case: Acquired at the deadline in 2049 from Vancouver, then traded away to Twin Cities before the season started, then reacquired from Twin Cities midseason. He hit like crazy after coming back from Minnesota, but is he worth $10M? Depends on how you feel about your catching situation. How does Mexico City management feel about their current catching situation? Not great. Lara was strong. The team can afford him, especially on an expiring deal.
Keep or Dump: Pretty much 50/50. Expect the team to explore some other options quickly before deciding on Lara's future. The $10M isn't a deal breaker but there are better options out there.

RF Fernando Moreno
2050 Stats: .294/.353/.477, 29 2B, 23 HR, 4.8 WAR, 128 OPS+
Remaining Contract: $8.3M
Fernando Moreno things. This guy is the new Juan Pablo in my mind. What are we even talking about here?
Keep or Dump: Keep FOREVER

Player Options/Opt-Outs

Image
OF Aaron Haney
2050 Stats: .305/.369/.563, 35 2B, 36 HR, 44 SB, 8.2 WAR, 155 OPS+
Remaining Contract (if he opts in): $23M
Haney had a great season in his opt out year, arguably the best of his career at 31. He has the keys to the city here. He actually has two chances to decide if he wants out, thanks to a player opt-out and a player option. Haney has been the engine that drives the Aztec attack since he was acquired from Valencia during the 2047-48 offseason. His choice, more than any other, impacts what the Aztecs can and need to do this offseason.
Will He Stay or Will He Go: Odds are he goes. Great season at 31, shows no signs of slowing down yet. He'll hit the market and be coveted.

Mutual Options

DH Matt Normore
2050 Stats: .347/.369/.545, 39 2B, 10 3B, 12 HR, 41 SB, 4.1 WAR, 150 OPS+
Remaining Contract: $4M
What a bargainza Normore has been for the Aztecs. $6.64M over the last two seasons for 7.4 WAR. That'll play. 2050 was definitely a career year for Normore at 29. He's a low power DH but does enough with the bat besides to produce quite well.
Will He Stay or Will He Go: He'll probably go again. He opted out last season but didn't find greener pastures and returned. If he goes again, he might find them this time.
Keep or Dump: Keep. He'll still be a bargain at $4M for next season. If he stays can can't cut it, the team can bid him farewell at any point. It's a low risk high reward play that the franchise would be happy to make.

CF Gilberto Falchonelli
2050 Stats: .246/.312/.698, 13 2B, 11 HR, 21 SB, 0.7 WAR, 93 OPS+
Remaining Contract: $3.15M, $3.15M(T)
Falchonelli was signed as a necessity and has been pretty meh. Average bat, not great D in CF. Probably time for him to go back into the pool.
Will He Stay or Will He Go: He'll probably opt to stay. No one else is gonna give him $6.25M over the next couple years.
Keep or Dump: Dump. He's got some value, but he's not worth $3M a season.

Now, Aztec nation holds its breath and waits for Haney...
