It's no surprise that 2040 was a disappointment for the Aztecs. The team vastly underperformed its preseason projections and looked disenchanted and lackluster at times throughout the season. Sources close to the team indicate that Aztec GM Fred Holmes has no intention of taking a lack of fire lying down and is considering a clean sweep of all assistant coaches this offseason.
"Everyone but Fernando," the source said, "Fernando has only been on the job a year, and he's Holmes' guy. Everyone else had better have their stuff ready."
News came down today that the exodus has already started, with Assistant GM Rob Benson retiring and team trainier Tom Moran leaving with an expired contract. The real question will come with the pitching coach, Jon Hall, and hitting coach, Gelana Adamu. Hall has been with the organization since 2027 and is highly respected throughout the Mexico City hierarchy. Adamu is well regarded around the league and has had success with the franchise as well. If manager Fernando Aguilar is allowed to choose his own staff, would he disrupt the status quo to bring in some new faces? On the pitching front, the Aztecs have franchise icon Steve Hoffman who has has success in the minor leagues and could provide a seamless and familiar transition for Aguilar, but the hitting side isn't so clear.
The Mexico City GM, who is often loathe to make coaching changes, did nothing to provide security when asked about rumors of potential coaching changes: "This was a very frustrating season for all of us and I think we owe it to our fans and to ourselves to make sure we do what we can to make sure this is an anomaly and not the new normal. Everyone had a part in digging this hole, we need to decide who will be best suited to help us dig out of it."
The Aztec boss didn't provide any specifics about his plan, saying only that a 'comprehensive review' would be conducted and decisions would be made accordingly. Sounds like a storm is gathering in Mexico City. Time will tell who gets caught in it.

Well, someone had to go, and it wasn't going to be the GM.
