2036.5: Aztecs purchasing for development?
Sources from within the Mexico City Aztecs organization and the Mexico City building authority have both quitely confirmed, on condition of anonymity, that the Aztecs have been quietly acquiring property around Ullamaliztli Field for several months. While the team has denied any expansion plans to this point, the amount of property rumored to have been acquired by the team is enough to be the start of a sizeable commercial development surrounding the stadium. Rumors and speculation would seem to indicate an Aztec-themed development containing restaurants, hotels, and entertainment along with a healthy dose of historical Aztec tie-ins. Team owner Meat Poplowski Jr. had the following comment:
"I have nothing to confirm at this point. We have looked into several different options to help increase fan immersion but have not settled on anything concrete at this juncture. I would expect that we will have a productive conversation at the board meeting scheduled in December and will take it from there. Rest assured, the Aztec fan base is the best in the BBA and it's what makes baseball in Mexico City the experience that it is. We have every intention of working towards a partnership with the citizens of Mexico City that rewards that support and returns it in kind."
Another potential possibility for the hypothetical Aztec acquisition would be a large parking structure. The stadium's location near downtown means that parking is at a premium, especially on game days. A parking facility would give fans a place to tailgate before the game and would help relieve congestion due to parking on city streets. Mexico City has issued no permits of any sort for the areas in question at this point according to reports, so the major question would be what the timeline is for any project of a large scope. Time will tell but it seems as though Mexico City will be getting a facelift for the sake of the Aztecs in the near future.
