The Wyoming Wire, Vol I, #5 - Postitional Analysis, 3rd Base

3rd Base

Image
Bill Stickles – 6’3”, 26 years old, 1B/3B/SS/LF/RF, R/R – A career .309 hitter, Stickles is a great first baseman, who is playing adequately at 3B. Bill has elite contact ability and good gap power and eye at the plate. His home run power is probably not good enough to warrant starting at 1st base, but he should be a good solution for a while at 3B. Arbitration eligible. Signed for 1 year at $940,000.

Tommy Nolan (Nashville) – 5’10”, 21 years old, 2B/3B/SS, L/R – A defensive stalwart at all three skilled infield positions, Nolan will likely never hit enough to make it as a bench player. Still under a minor league contract.

Image
Nasir “Nasty Nas” Jones (Nashville) – 5’8”, 21 years old, 2B/3B/SS/CF, S/R – Another defensive maniac, this former rapper has zero chance of even a cup of coffee because he is terrible at the plate. Still under a minor league contract.

Miguel Pedraza (Rockford) – 6’0”, 26 years old, 2B/3B/SS, S/R – Solid defense. Absolutely no hitting talent whatsoever. Not yet arbitration eligible. Signed for the $300,000 minimum.

Image
Olmedo Saenz (Rockford) – 6’2”, 24 years old, 3B, R/R – This former MLB player should have just hung up the spikes. Another miserable hitter. Still under a minor league contract.

Jacob Smalls (Rockford) – 6’5”, 20 years old, 1B/3B, R/R – Smalls, like many of the 3B prospects, is a black hole at the plate. He can field quite well at 1B, and adequately at 3B. It won’t matter though. Still under a minor league contract.

Jesus Colon (Laramie) – 5’8”, 24 years old, 1B/3B/SS/LF, S/R – Finally a minor leaguer with some talent! Colon is a decent fielder and has elite gap power and good home run power. Sadly, his OBP is likely to be around .300 as a big leaguer. It’s unclear why he is buried at A Laramie, but expect him to be exhumed promptly. Still under a minor league contract.

Kevin Stewart (Laramie) – 6’2”, 19 years old, 2B/3B, R/R – His existence is just short of pointless. An average fielder, Stewart can probably make enough contact to play at AAA, but can’t do much else. Still under a minor league contract.
