Wolves Announce Reunion with Salazar, Signing of Gagne and Others (2040.5)

Post by ThePreyingManta » Wed Sep 25, 2019 11:49 pm

With the off-season over and a lot of interesting players still available, the Wolves decided to make a few offers to fill some open spots. Major league contracts were given to CF Willard Gagne and LF Alfredo Salazar, while 2B Brian Sullivan and RP Jeff Whitney were given minor league deals. Also, RP Juan Reyes was claimed on waivers from Hawaii.

Gagne seems to be a perfect fit for a Madison team that just traded away the only center fielder on the roster, and at 2 years and $22,500,000, the deal could be a bargain if Gagne can repeat his performance from last year when he posted 3.6 WAR. The second year of the contract includes a team option that the team can use as an escape hatch if Gagne’s injury proneness rears its ugly head.

While the Gagne signing made sense, the signing of Alfredo Salazar was a bit more puzzling, as the Wolves just added a corner outfielder in Mitch Dalrymple. Salazar, a 2-time Sawyer Silk Award winner with Madison and potential Hall of Famer, has aged well and could still see plenty of playing time for the Wolves, but it is expected that he will slot in behind Andrew Torres and Mitch Dalrymple on the depth chart. What Salazar will mostly be used for is a platoon bat for any of a number of left-handed batters on the roster. Most of the time he will platoon with Dalrymple, but he could also see time platooning for Torres or Natanael Barral.

Minor league signee Brian Sullivan is a fantastic defender with an uninspiring bat, but he fills a much-needed position after the departure of Mons Raider and Jharod Thealer. Sullivan is expected to start the season at shortstop until prospect Salvador Allende proves that he is ready. RP Jeff Whitney was non-tendered by Boise at the end of last season after a dreadful 8.2 innings at the big league level. Whitney will likely earn a spot in the bullpen to start the season, but it wouldn’t be too surprising if he struggles to keep his spot for the entire season. The Wolves also decided to take a chance on RP Juan Reyes, who was put on waivers by the Tropics. Reyes has worked as both a starter and a reliever in the minors and made a brief appearance in the Tropics bullpen last season. He will be given a chance to crack the Opening Day roster in the remainder of Spring Training, but he could very well be waived again by the Wolves.
