Wolves Lose Long-Time Stars in Expansion Draft (2040.2)

Post by ThePreyingManta » Sun Sep 15, 2019 11:18 pm

And just like that, two of Madison’s all-time great players are gone. RF Steve Dempsey and 1B Jon Mick were reunited with former Wolves GM Chris Wilson on his new team in Portland after they were selected with the 44th and 84th picks in the draft, respectively. The two players had illustrious careers with the Wolves, but it was clear that new GM Will Gibson was ready to move on, as both players were left unprotected before the expansion draft.

Steve Dempsey was drafted by Madison with the 13th overall pick in the 2023 Amateur Draft and joined the big league club in 2026. Dempsey took a few years to get acclimated to the BBA, but when he did, he became a constant threat at the plate, hitting over .300 every season through 2039. Dempsey won the Frick League batting title in 2031 and was named an all-star four times. Although “Bootleg” was never a plus defender, he became especially bad in his last few seasons with the team, posting zone ratings under -10 in the last three years. As a consequence of his poor fielding and declining bat, Dempsey failed to put up positive WAR in 2036, 2037, and 2039. He also increasingly became an injury risk, missing at least 20 games in his last four years on the club. Prior to his decline, the Wolves tendered him a 6 year, $89 million contract that immediately looked like a mistake. Dempsey is still owed $15,160,000 next season, but luckily the Wolves will no longer be on the hook after he put up -0.5 WAR last year.

While Dempsey was busy hitting for a high average and scoring runs, Mick was often the one driving those runs in. Mick was drafted second overall by Madison in 2026 but failed to sign. He was then drafted third overall, yet again by Madison, the next season. Mick debuted in 2029 and immediately showed his immense power. He would go on to hit 449 home runs in 11 seasons, missing only one game in his last 10 seasons. He also led the league in home runs in 2034 and led in RBI twice. Despite his offensive prowess, Mick never posted a WAR above 4.8. Although his power remained, his overall production fell off in 2036 when his OBP dropped 35 points and continued to trend downward over the next four seasons. Most recently, Mick experienced his worst season by far, hitting .232/.289/.429 with -1 WAR. Another player signed to a massive contract directly before their decline, Mick is still owed $40 million over the next two seasons.

All in all, the Wolves came out of the Expansion Draft in a much better position than they went into it and really in a much better position than anyone could have reasonably expected. With the loss of Dempsey and Mick, the Wolves gain $55.16 million over the next two seasons while also losing -1.5 WAR. The Wolves also had RP Sixto Maldonado taken by the Lumberjacks. Maldonado is a 21-year-old reliever without much of an outlook. Even with how abysmal the Madison bullpen has been, he was still never given a look at the major league level.

In all honesty, I was taking Dempsey all along. Mick was more of a "what the heck" moment. It's not like either have long term deals. Dempsey is 1 year. Mick 2. Mick was actually the last extremely popular guy left on the draft board when I took him so perhaps he boosts attendance some.

I intend to let Dempsey be my DH against RHP and see what happens with his WAR numbers and overall productivity there.

I clearly over drafted on salaries but have pretty much gotten all of that taken care of already.

And yes, Will should feel relieved now. I gave him a gift. If only there was pitching available to help him this season.

I think the story-line of Chris bringing over two of Madison's popular players is pretty cool though -- a GM with a new expansion team leaning on a couple guys he knows and trusts. There's a great TN in that somewhere.

Agreed, very cool! Knowing Chris' loyalty, both could have future roles within the Portland organization down the road as well, whether it's coaching, scouting, or broadcasting. Maybe even a Jon Mick's Bar & Grill franchise that breaks ground at the new stadium in a year or two.

I think Chris needs to deal for Raider now. You know you want to.

Nah. I am fond of Raider and he was one of my "record breaking" guys but I don't think I really have a spot for him. He's a longer term contract and I really don't want him playing 2B and I'd rather have a different type of player at 1B.
