That's What Cheesehead: 39.12 - Wolves Name Award Winners

Post by 7teen » Fri Sep 06, 2019 5:59 pm

For the final time as GM of the Wolves, Chris Wilson announced the winners of the team awards. After last year's debacle of a ceremony in which the winner of the Kilkenny Award was met with confusion and chaos at the team's banquet, and led to the resignation of several key figures in the front office, Wilson chose to cancel this year's season ending banquet and just announced the winner's through a fax to the press. Wilson also chose to announce all of the award winners simultaneously this season opposed to the typical separate announcements. In the release, Wilson stated "I'm just trying to give the guys that deserve it one last bit of recognition before I pack my stuff up and head out of here for good. Plus, who needs all those pesky participation points anyway?"

Roberto Gracia
I wasn't sure if we even had a rookie this season then realized Gracia got some PT late in the season. He'll probably still be considered a rookie next season since he only threw 21.1 relief innings this season but he was able to compile a 0.7 WAR in that very short span of time so he'll get the award. In those innings, he managed to strike out 29 batters while posting a 1-1 record, 3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 2 saves.

Justin Marco Award (Top Reliever)

Barry Ronan
The Wolves used the bullpen a lot in 2039. Both by strategy purposes and by bad starting standards. Granted the former was a by-product of the latter. Perhaps the biggest beneficiary of that was Ronan. Ronan appeared in a career high 65 games in 2039. He logged a career high 123.0 innings pitched. He also posted a career (and team) best 1.8 WAR. Combine all that with a solid 3.80 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 131 strikeouts and he was a no-brainer choice for the award. He posted an 8-7 record this year and surprisingly didn't record a save.

James Robinson
Woof! As has been the case for the last decade, picking someone for this award wasn't easy. I mean, granted we had plenty of guys to choose from. Madison used 16 different pitchers this season in a starters role but only 5 of those 16 saw double digit starts. With 31 this season, Robinson led the way. He wins the award moreso by virtue of having the highest WAR (I normally don't look just at WAR but we were so bad I needed something). Robinson went 8-9 on the year with a 5.24 ERA and 1.63 WHIP. Yeah, that was award worthy!?

Andrew Torres
Now we get to an award that someone was actually good enough to warrant publicity. Madison had 4 worthy candidates of whom posted a WAR over 3.0 this season. We had six guys post an OPS over .800. Four guys had 100 or more RBI and six guys had a batting average over .300. So the choices were pretty open. But in the end, Torres, the guy who led the team in OPS, RBI, hits, and was second on the team in HRs and WAR take,s the award. Torres hit .338/.387/.580 on the season with 26 homeruns and 126 runs batted in. He was a solid candidate for the FL Sawyer Silk Award this season until a mid-season injury forced him to miss a month of action. The 22 year old leftfielder may be claiming many, many more of these awards in the next few years.

Tight budget in Madison last few years. We haven’t been able to upgrade.

Portland will be all caught up. Haha
