That's What Cheesehead: 39.11 - The Race to 1,000

Imagine this, if you can.... You're sitting in Shotz Stadium and it is the final series of the season. The Wolves are in the middle of some sort of playoff push. Maybe it's the division. Maybe it's for a wild card spot. The Wolves are hosting the Kernals and the fans are going wild. Not only are the Wolves winning and making the dash for the post-season, but the fans are wanting to see runs. Lots and lots of runs. They've been seeing them all season so why not again, in this final 3 game set. The crazy thing is, fans are not only pulling for the Wolves to score but they want the Kernals to score too. Just not enough to overtake the Wolves in the game. Why are they pulling for both teams to score? To see history of course!

Now in 2037, the San Fernando Bears scored 1,104 runs for the season. It was the first time a team from the Frick League had scored 1,000 runs in the Frick League since 2011 when Long Beach accomplished the same feat. As for Madison, they've never scored 1,000 runs in a season. This year, through 83 games, the team is on pace to do just that. The Wolves have scored 514 runs through 83 games. When you subtract the 11 runs they scored in the last two games, theyd have 503 at the half way point putting them on pace for 1,006 on the season. But here is where history takes over.

The last time a team allowed 1,000 runs in the Frick was way back in 2019 when the Birmingham Bandits allowed 1,073 on the season, over 200 more runs than their closest Frick competitor that season. So what's the history?

No team has ever SCORED AND ALLOWED 1,000 runs in the season season. Ever (that we think. I didn't look very hard but I'm assuming.)

The Wolves allowed 466 runs in the first half of the season so they'll have some "work to do" if they're going to make history. When doubled, the club is on pace to allow only 932 runs on the season. Like their runs scored, it would place them with the highest mark in the Frick League.

"It's made my job very difficult" said Wolves manager Millard Davis. "Every night it's like a football score out there. Trying to figure out how to hang on to leads in the middle of games and how to juggle the rotation is a balancing act for sure. Yeah, we are going to score runs. But we're going to give them up to."

I guess as the saying goes: No lead is safe but no deficit is insurmountable.

For fans of the Wolves, lets hope the only thing they're cheering for is history in the form of a post-season run. Not allowed runs.

Using the same spreadsheet I used for the Z score analysis from a few years ago, I can tell you how many runs each team who scored 1000+ gave up (and vice versa as well).

1000+ run offenses:

2011 Long Beach 1041 (919)
2037 San Fernando 1014 (801)
2007 Baltimore: 1009 (754)

1000+ run pitching staffs:

2019 Birmingham 1073 (713)
2009 Seattle 1055 (880)
2009 Buffalo 1033 (739)
2007 Seattle 1024 (820)
2032 Halifax 1019 (802)
2001 Louisville 1000 (808)

Havana Sugar Kings/San Fernando Bears: 32-50 (1608-1481)
Des Moines Kernels: 52-

League Champion- 34
JL Champion- 34
FL Champion- 36, 37
JL Southern- 34
FL Pacific- 37, 39
Wild Card- 33, 35, 36, 40, 43
