That's What Cheesehead: 38.57 - Machiavelli To Claim 3rd Diamond Glove

The final tally has not been released, but inside sources from around the league have indicated that Madison Wolves centerfielder Niccolo Machiavelli will claim his third Yogi Zimmer Diamond Glove Award for his defensive play in centerfield this season. Not only is it his third award, but he claims the honor for the second consecutive season, adding the 2035 award to the back to back nods in 2037 and 2038.

Machiavelli played in a career best 160 games this season for Madison with all of those in centerfield. A demanding position to play, many were surprised Niccolo was able to play it so many times with very minimal rest throughout the season.

"I honestly felt really good this year" said Niccolo who turned 23 earlier this season. "I've had some nagging injuries in the past that have kept me sidelined for a period of time but nothing this year. I think that helped obviously in the decision to play me every day." It also helped that the Wolves let Jose Carlos Moreno loose this season. The 2036 winner of the Yogi Zimmer Diamond Glove Award, Moreno had been battling with Machiavelli for time in CF the last few seasons. Increasing salaries for both players and a decline in Moreno's playing ability forced the Wolves to let Moreno go during the season. He's since been picked up by the JackRabbits of Edmonton.

Machiavelli had his best season to date as a Madison Wolves. He hit .297/.371/.419 on the season, all career bests. Playing daily obviously helped him put up career bests in several other categories as well. But those numbers, mixed with superb defense, allowed him to post a best 3.5 WAR as well. Defensively though, he wasn't as good as previous award winning seasons. His +8.1 ZR was his lowest during his 3 Diamond Glove seasons as was his 3.03 RNG. He also contributed just 17 assists from CF, down from the 22 and 20 he performed in his 2035 and 2037 seasons. All in all though, Machiavelli continues to provide solid offense while playing elite caliber defense in the Wolves outfield.

Machiavelli will be the only recipient of an award this season.

Machiavelli played all but 50 innings in CF for the Wolves this year, so he's one of those guys for whom the defensive metrics my script works with "almost" captures.

Here's the Madison Fly Ball charts for the past two seasons, with the primary CF zones highlighted. Overall. Nicollo's range is super, though I'dsay his corner mates haven't been particularly helpful.
