That's What Cheesehead: 38.55 - Wilson Refuses to Hand-Out Kilkenny Award

Post by 7teen » Mon Jun 03, 2019 2:12 pm

The annual "Evander Kilkenny Award" is an award the Wolves hand out each season to the team's starting pitcher. As has always been the case with all the team awards, Wilson issues those at the team's year end banquet. After handing out the top Rookie and Reliever awards, Wilson was handed the trophy and envelope with the recipient of the Kilkenny Award in it. After opening the envelope Wilson looked up, back down, and back up again and announced:

"No fucking way. None of you deserve this award. I don't care who you voted for."

The awards are voted on by the players on the team and various media persons for the Wolves. The Wolves pitching staff allowed an FL high 925 runs this season. The starting rotation posted an ERA of 5.37, the worst in the entire Frick as well. Using the hybrid method again in 2038, the Wolves used 15 different pitchers to start games. Seven of those started double digit games and not a single pitcher on the staff won 10 games this season.

After seeing the envelope Wilson stormed out of the banquet hall taking the trophy and envelope with him. Players and Madison Wolves personnel sat in stunned silence for several minutes wondering what had happened. Some thought the night was over and a low murmur began to echo through those in attendance as they ate their meal.

Finally, Assistant GM Bopper Kengos took to the stage. Wolves owner Mick Shrimpton, Jr leaned into his ear and Kengos nodded. Kengos then began to announce "the 2038 winner of the Evander Kilkenny Award is".....

Suddenly a loud bang echoed from the back of the room as Wilson stormed back in, slamming the double doors open so far they hit the wall.

"I have the winner here fellas" Wilson yelled from the back of the room. "The winner is Juan Trujillo. The crowd, getting over the shock of Wilson storming back in, rose to it's feet to clap for Trujillo.

Juan led the Wolves in strikeouts this season with 114. He finished the season with a 7-8 overall record and a 4.76 ERA. He also posted a decent 1.34 WHIP. He appeared in 32 games, starting 19. His 19 starts were 3rd most on the team.

Meanwhile Kengos stood behind the podium, looking at Shrimpton. Both just looked stunned at one another and shrugged. Kengos went back to his seat and sat down.

Both Kengos and Shrimpton declined comment after the banquet on who they thought the pitcher was that was supposed to win. Only a portion of the envelope Wilson took with him was recovered from a nearby trashcan outside the lobby. The letters "ez" were all that were found leaving many to wonder whether Mario Gonzalez, Cisco Chavez, or god forbid Enrique Gomez was the actual recipient of the award.
