That's What Cheesehead: 38.51 - Down on the Farm - Marching Ants

And to finally conclude this series of reports on the Wolves' minor league system we get to the Charlottesville Marching Ants. After Wilson's tirade to the press earlier about how bad the Wolves farm was and the need to report any of it, at least the Marching Ants offer a glimpse of hope into the future of the Madison Wolves franchise through its farm system.

The Marching Ants finished the season 33-31. While barely something to brag about, they were the only team to finish over .500 this season in the whole organization and was just 1 game shy of making the post-season, losing the division to the Super Stars of Sterling. They finished with a positive run differential and while not really taking the league by storm in either offense or pitching, they came home middle of the pack in a lot of statistical categories. Despite the average finish, there were plenty of names on the Marching Ants roster that could be seen down the road in a Wolves uniform.

Most notable from that list is Manobu Shimizu (Wolves #1 Prospect). Shimizu didn't have an outstanding stat line but still produced a 1.9 WAR and hit 12 "Shimi Slams" and drove in 29 RBI in 64 games played. Shimizu will move up the Wolves farm system next year as the 17 year old is showing good signs of growth already. Stepan Simonovic (Wolves #8 Prospect) produced a 1.6 WAR thanks in large part to some solid defense on the left side of the Ants infield. Simonovic is a tweener prospect. He has the glove to be a big league but the bat may not be good enough to make it. Joong-guen Yi and Wiyoto Pamungkas produced 2.9 WAR and 1.6 WAR each. Yi, a 26 year old rookie leaguer, was passed through waivers this season and ended up in rookie league where he torched those youngsters. Well, torched is a strong word for a guy with a .750 OPS, but he plays elite defense. With a weak bat, he'll likely move up to career AAA status next sason. As for Pamungkas, I'm not sure why his WAR number was so high. He sucks and will never make it out of the minor leagues. Neither Yi or Pamungkas are on the Wolves prospects list.

The Wolves' top pitching prospect Yorikane Miyamoto (Wolves #2 Prospect) pitched all season in Charlottesville and had a solid year. In 14 starts, he went 4-5 with a 3.07 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. He struck out 63 in 82 innings pitched. Antonio Rodriguez (Wolves #10 Prospect) led the team in wins with 7 and had a solid 2.42 ERA and even 1.00 WHIP. Rodriguez fits the mold of Wolves pitching of late. Antonio Harrera (Wolves #6 Prospect) also fits that mold and had a solid 2.61 ERA and 0.91 WHIP.
