That's What Cheesehead: 38.46 - Is Hinson Adding Trade Value With Late Surge?

It has become apparent that with the Wolves being out of the race in 2038 that the club is trying to take a new direction in 2039. That all started when the Wolves attempted but failed to trade off aging veterans at the trade deadline but only became move obvious today as rumors surfaced that the club is pushing for Enrique Gomez to turn down his player option next year. On that note, General Manager Chris Wilson was quoted today as saying the club will also like to move future hall of famer and veteran catcher Elroy Hinson this off-season.

Hinson, who was showing his age early in the season, was off to the worst start of his career. He failed to hit over .225 over any of the first three months of the season with just 5 homeruns and 24 runs batted in. "It was one of my worst hitting stretches ever" Hinson was quoted as saying during the all-star break. "Nothing went right. I felt I was letting the team down and am afraid that just carried over all season." With a negative WAR, father time appeared to have caught up with Hinson who the Wolves tried unsuccessfully to move at the deadline.

But Hinson has gotten hot in the second half and the Wolves may look to capitalize on that stretch. Over the last three calendar months, Hinson hasn't hit worse that .302 over any stretch. The power and RBI total hasn't exactly climbed, but the slashline has. Elroy has an OBP over .390 from July through September after being below .290 for the first 3 months. His WAR is still at an un-Hinson like 0.6 on the season but it's building. Enough so that Wilson is hoping Hinson can find a suitor this off-season on a contending team.

"We know Elroy is popular here in Madison but fans like Hinson everywhere" said Wilson. "He's just a popular guy throughout the league. We'd love to find a team in the hunt for a catching upgrade in a position to make a post-season run. At a reasonable contract next year and a team option for 2040, he's a very low risk, high reward move a contending team would be looking to make this off-season."

Of course with no other serviceable catchers in the Wolves' farm system, one would have to wonder what sort of plans Wilson has this off-season. Perhaps just not having a nursing home in the clubhouse with these old guys is all he's looking for. Regardless, someone has to be able to pitch and catch next season. Right!?
