That's What Cheesehead: 38.35 - Wolves Inch Closer in June

Post by 7teen » Tue Apr 23, 2019 12:02 pm

After back to back losing months, the Wolves rebounded in June and posted a winning record. The Wolves went 16-11 for the month and despite having a losing record still for the season, are within shouting distance of the wild card race at the moment. An 8-1 record in the division in June also helped propel the club into 3rd place now in the Heartland but it's going to take some more great play to catch Yellow Springs who have distanced themselves considerably from most of the division. Taking 2 of 3 from the Nine to close the month helped some, but it's going to take good play by Madison and some bad play from the Nine to trim the 12 game deficit the Wolves face in the division heading into July.

While pitching is still dismal, the Wolves offense found their groove in June and and have climbed to 2nd in the Johnson League in runs scored. The team also has a positive run differential for the first time all season despite the fact the team has allowed the 2nd most runs in the JL.

Andrew Torres
The second year player was in a bit of a sophomore slump before June but he got clicking in June. Torres hit .382/.419/.544 for the month with 3 homeruns and 15 runs batted in. Surprisingly he scored the fewest runs he had all season and only had 2 doubles but he cut his strikeout total in half from May to June and the club now hopes to see the 2nd year OF take off and helped boost the middle of the order behind Jon Mick.

Another pitching honor to a reliever. But let's be honest, does Madison have specified roles for anyone these days? In June, Diaz pitched in 13.2 innings over the course of 10 games and went 3-0 with a save. He did walk a high number for the month with 5 which gives him 6 on the year but he also struck out a monthly best 14 and has 35 now on the season. The Wolves also chose to re-up Diaz's contract by giving him another 2 years at $1.9 million. Diaz has been a solid staple as a Wolves reliever over the last 7 seasons as he continuously eats up well over 70 innings a year.
