That's What Cheesehead: 38.34 - Byron Gonzalez to be Inducted

The Wolves announced today their newest inductee into the team's Hall of Fame and Museum. The Wolves museum, which opened in 2014, is the league's greatest collection of players and historical honors in all the league. The newest member to join this illustrious team hall is Madison Wolves reliever Byron Gonzalez.

Gonzalez spent 16 seasons with the Madison Wolves from 2001-2016. He was a member of both the 2004 and 2009 Landis Champion winnings teams. Gonzalez finished his career with a solid 3.62 ERA and and 1.22 WHIP. He retired with a record of 77 wins and 46 losses.

Having spent most of his career pitching in a set-up roll rather than a closer, Gonzalez never really got a lot of recognition during his playing days. Much of his career was spent setting up the possible save for the likes of Justin Marco, then Jorge Garcia, and then finally Luis Tiant, IV. All three of whom are in the Wolves Hall of Fame and three of the top closers in Wolves history. "We had some great ball teams back then" Gonzalez added. "I knew what my role was with the club and accepted it. I was very fortunate to play on some championship teams with some great players. My time in Madison was well spent and I enjoyed the job I did when called upon."

Gonzalez appeared in 790 games with Madison as a reliever which is 3rd most all time behind just Garcia and Marco. Oddly enough two of his best seasons with the Wolves were during those championship runs in '04 and '09. In 2004, he pitched in 54 innings and posted a 1.67 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. In 2009 he went 40.2 innings while posting a 1.99 ERA and 0.93 WHIP.

Gonzalez retired with a 13.6 WAR, a solid accomplishment for a middle reliever. He also posted 580 career strikeouts to just 156 walks!

His induction will be Saturday, September 4 in the Wolves home game against Vancouver. Why Vancouver? Well, yep!

Among the things I like about team HoF is that they make me go back and look at players who came along before my time.

I was typing out another TN before I read this reply in which I mention another MR that I've had now for 7 years and just re-upped. I think I get too attached to players!
