That's What Cheesehead: 38.32 - Allende Reports to Rookie Ball

The draft is complete and now the Wolves front office begins that back and forth between itself and amateur player agents trying to get players signed into the organization so they can report to their respective level for the pro careers. The Wolves got their "Shimi Slam" going by singing 1st round pick Manobu Shimizu rather quickly and announced today that they've also signed 2nd round pick Salvador Allende as well. While Shimizu has already been discussed and the excitement he'll bring to Charlottesvile this rookie season, not much has been said about Allende until today.

Allende is a lanky 6-1 shortstop from Chile. He fits in with a mold that GM Chris Wilson has established with a lot of his players on the offensive side. While the power available in this year's draft was at an all-time high, the Wolves opted to go a different round with their 2nd pick in Allende...

"We like Allende's potential skill set as a hitter. While acquiring another power bat to play a position we probably already have filled wouldn't have been the worst thing ever, we felt drafting a player with a good skill set to play middle infield could prove to be more valuable long-term" said Wilson today announcing the Allende signing. "We see a lot of similarities between Allende and our current shortstop of Jharod Thealer. Thealer is proving he's a valuable piece on a big-league team and we think Allende will be one day as well."

Allende projects to be solid hitter who will hit for average and get on base. He doesn't appear to be a power hitter at the moment, but the abiity to get on-base at a high rate will likely be Allende's ticket to the big leagues. He'll have some work to do if he wants to play shortstop in the future. At worst, he appears to be a potential all-star at 2B in the next half decade. As a lefty hitter, he'll project to be even better for the Wolves in Shotz Stadium.

Allende agreed to a $1 million signing bonus and will report with Shimizu to the Wolves rookie league team in Charlottesville, VA. Shimizu signed a $1.8 million bonus.

See you're playing him at shortstop- I'd definitely look into giving him time at the other infield positions as well. 2B looks like his longterm position to me.

Yeah I mentioned that in my TN. Put him at the right level then let the manager set the lineup and never looked at it again. He's definitely a better looking 2B.

I've told myself when I get the time I need to evaluate my minor leagues again and put a few guys in new positions to learn them.
