That's What Cheesehead: 37.25 - Wolves Add Pitching Depth

Post by 7teen » Tue Jan 29, 2019 2:37 pm

As it becomes ever the more apparent that the Wolves are going to stick around long enough in the post-season race to get everyone's hopes up, the front office went out recently and acquired some pitching depth. The most notable depth being added to the starting rotation where the depth was the equivalent of a hotel kiddie pool. In a deal with the Huntsville Phantoms, the Wolves acquired two big league arms in exchange for two minor leaguers.

Coming to Madison were starting pitcher Esteban Sanchez (7/6/8 Ratings) and reliever Rafael Suarez (9/7/6 Ratings). Sanchez, a solid southpaw starter, has had a roller coaster career up to this point and was having a so-so year with Huntsville prior to the trade. Suarez is a pretty standard RH reliever who throws hard with good stuff and solid movement.

"We wanted some more depth" said Wilson. "We had a few guys struggling out of our pen and Suarez was our first target. He's nothing special but we don't necessarily need special right now. We just need better than what we had. Same really goes for Sanchez. We've been piecing together a rotation all season, giving several short starts to relievers all seasons just to get through games. We may still continue to do that while letting some guys throw from the bullpen, but Sanchez gives us another arm in case we need to go with a traditional 5-man rotation at certain points the remainder of the way."

Going to Huntsville in the trade are 1B prospectEmilio Lugo (8/9/7/5/7 Talents) and P prospect David Bates (8/7/9 Talents). "We traded Lugo from a position of depth" said Wilson. "As a firstbaseman, he was pretty much in a logjam to ever see time in Madison. He has good splits. But with Mick, Barral, and all the other 1B/DH types we have both on our roster and in our farm, we just felt adding some pitching now was worth losing Lugo. We'll be interested to see what he can do if he cracks the lineup in Huntsville. As for Bates, we didn't like the idea of moving him but we didn't want to squander our chances at the now. Bates was just drafted by us and looks to be a solid lefty reliever down the road. But that road is 2-3 years into the future. And honestly, we used Kyle's own approach with that move by adding a piece that we know what we are getting now rather than the uncertainty of the future. Bates and Suarez are comparable guys separated by 13 years or so of age."

Of course if something happens and Bates shifts into a starter we'll be kicking ourselves hard and sit back and watch Kyle fleece us yet again. But for the now, let's just focus on a possible post-season spot for Madison or the eventual heartbreak that's most likely to come.

I'd say there is a 50% that 5 years from now I'll have nothing to show for the deal (Lugo stays as he is and ends up buried in my depth chart and the super raw 17 year old reliever flames out), 35% that one of the two works out (Lugo bumps a bit or Bates fills out) making it 'fair' and 15% that it is a "fleecing" (Lugo bumps a bit and Bates fills out). And probably a 99% that one or both are traded back out before they end up in their final form, lol.
