That's What Cheesehead: 37.27 - Why The Wolves Will Lose

Post by 7teen » Tue Feb 12, 2019 9:58 am

Thirteen games left on the schedule. A magic number of 9. Currently the number 2 wild card in the Frick League. Five and a half games back of the division with three games against Omaha still left. Sure, Madison is sitting in a decent position to make their first post-season in 4 seasons. The club has already clinched a non losing record, meaning they won't have back to back of those since what felt like the entire decade of the '20s. So why do fans feel uneasy in Madison?

"Last week has me real worried" said one long-time Wolves fan. "This club had a golden opportunity to punch their ticket against Boise and Hawaii and the failed to do so. Sure, we're still 4.5 games up on Long Beach and Seattle, but I don't like it. I just don't have a good feeling about it."

This fan was obviously sharing many of the same concerns Wolves General Manager Chris Wilson is feeling as the team heads into the final two weeks of the season. "We're going to have to play better than we just did, that's for" Wilson said. "We slept through the easy part of the schedule and now have a gauntlet to run through to finish it up. With all the injuries we've had of late and the remaining schedule, it isn't going to be easy."

Among the injured personnel at the moment include: Steve Dempsey (.318/.345/.412, 4 HR, 79 RBI) who was injured during the last sim and will miss the rest of the 2037 season regardless of post-season; Jharod Thealer (.278/.398/.401, 6 HR, 77 RBI) who could return at the conclusion of the next sim and join Madison for the final week of the season; James Robinson (7 - 7, 5.44 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, 106 K) who, like Thealer, will return next week for the stretch final week; Elroy Hinson (.278/.357/.430, 12 HR, 54 RBI) who is out for the remainder of the regular season but could return should the Wolves make it to the post-season; and John Garcia (.214/.321/.464, 10 HR, 25 RBI) who could return next week despite being out with a torn back muscle since late May.

Also mentioned has been the Wolves' schedule to close. The club finishes with 10 of their final 13 games on the road. Those 10 games include 4 in Edmonton, a team likely going to the post-season. The club also has 3 in Omaha, the team leading the Heartland Division and then close with 3 in Twin Cities, the team directly behind Madison in the wild card race but also a post-season team at the moment. The only games at home will be a 3 game series against Yellow Springs, a team that is fighting its way back to a .500 finish.

"I'd have felt better had we gone 3-4 agaisnt those types of teams last week than what we actually did" said Wilson. "I don't know what our record is against these remaining teams, but I feel very uneasy. I can't say what I'm thinking, but I don't feel good about things."

Madison is 14-19 against those 4 teams this season. Yeah, we don't feel good about things. :coffee:
