That's What Cheesehead: 37.26 - Hinson Injured. Wolves React with Trade

Typically when you lose one of your key players and free agent off-season signings it will spell the worst. And many fans probably feared the worst when Elroy Hinson went down this week in a game against Calgary with a strained abdominal muscle. The future hall of fame catcher was having a nice season in Madison this year and has been a pivotal piece in the Wolves' resurgence this season. When news broke that Hinson was likely out for the rest of the regular season, many felt the team's chances of a post-season run were ruined.

"It's an easy assumption to make" said manager Millard Davis. "The guy was a main piece of our offense and has been great behind the plate this season. His leadership alone has been a huge addition to the clubhouse. Clearly you don't lose that since he's still in the locker room, but knowing you won't be on the field each night is a huge damper to spirits. Not to mention his offensive production." Hinson was hitting .278/.357/.430 with 12 homeruns and 54 RBI. All indications pointed to a return of David Katzenbogen as the Wolves catcher. Katzenogen is best known for his outstanding defensive ability but minimal offensive skill. But GM Chris Wilson decided the team had played too well to perhaps lose the offensive mojo.

Just days after the injury news came out the Wolves reached a deal with the Vancouver Mounties to acquire Frick League all-star catcher Hotha Popo. Popo, a 25 year old free agent to be, supplies a solid glove replacement while having more offensive ability than Katzenbogen.

Popo is currently hitting .285/.398/.375 and has a 3.1 WAR on the season. "We love his ability to get on base" said Wolves GM Chris Wilson. "He doesn't have the pop that Hinson has but he has a skill set we really like in Madison. It'll definitely help boost our offense and hopefully keep it clicking well."

Popo will likely be inserted just in time as the Wolves have a crucial 3-game set next sim with Twin Cities. The two teams are currently in a dog fight for the final wild card spot in the Frick. Katzenbogen will stay on the roster as Popo's backup.

I’m very happy to see mr Popo turned into a good ball player.

I’m hoping he can keep Madison in post season form.

I wanted to trade for Popo. Then I realized the catcher I wanted to upgrade had the same exact ratings.

I like Forryan. I think he’d be a good catcher if given a full season of ABs.

Popo is slightly better defensively which may attribute to the better WAR. Also makes me wonder if those Work Ethic intangibles matter as well.
