That's What Cheesehead: 37.21 - Wolves Could Send as Many as 6 to All-Star Game

Post by 7teen » Sat Jan 19, 2019 8:15 pm

It's been a good year for the offense in Madison. The Wolves rank in the top 3 in nearly every offensive category this season, highlighed by the club's third place ranking in overall runs scored and topped off by the team's first place ranking in stolen bases and bases on balls. With the hot offense has emerged some stand-out offensive performances over the first half of the regular season which has landed some of the Wolves' best players on the All-Star ballot with a real shot at being named either starters for the club or as reserves to be announced later tonight or early tomorrow. Here are the key names that could be playing in the all-star game next week for the Wolves.

Image Jon Mick (7/7/10/6/7 Ratings)
Porky should be a virtual lock to make the All-Star game. If he does so, it will surprisingly be just his 3rd time ever making the team. Mick, who currently leads the entire BBA with 90 RBI is atop the FL in WAR among Designated Hitters. He's currently having one of, if not his best seasons to date. "Mick gets a bad rap because we paid him a lot of money" said Wolves GM Chris Wilson. "But he hits homeruns and he drives in runs. Yeah, we know, RBI aren't solely independent to Mick. But someone has to drive in the guys ahead of him and Mick has done just as good a job as anyone in the league the last 7-8 years as Porky." Mick is on pace for 140 or more RBI for the 5th consecutive season.

Image Mons Raider (9/6/2/8/9 Ratings)
Had the voting been done a couple of weeks ago, Raider might have been a lock to be the Frick League starter. Not that Mons has really dropped off much but other guys have passed him up and at this point Raider's best shot is as a reserve. With 78 stolen bases, Raider is blitzing the entire BBA yet again in stolen bases. In fact, he has 21 more than the next guy in the BBA and is 33 ahead of the next guy in the Frick. But he's not just a one trick pony. Raider is hitting .339/.430/.429 on the year which puts him 4th in the league in batting average, 2nd in on base percentage, and 2nd in the league in runs scored. His defense likely keeps his WAR from being astronomically insane, but at 3.3 right now, we'll gladly take that.

ImageJharod Thealer (7/6/3/9/8 Ratings)
The Thealer to SS experiment has been working thus far. So much in fact that Thealer actually leads all Frick League shortstops in WAR with a 2.5 mark. This is in large part to his slash line of .304/.404/.452. In game, Thealer leads the Frick in batting average, on-base percentage, OPS, WAR, hits, RBI, and total bases among shortstops. Nonetheless, he's expected to not be named the starter for the FL squad come the All-Star game.

Image Natanael Barral (7/9/8/7/6 Ratings)
Ok, I'll be realistic. From this point on these guys are stretches but still deserved a little publicity. Barral is having an excellent sophomore season that is seeing him hit .307/.395/.557. He's had a little down stretch recently but was seeing an OBP of over .400 for most of the year. With a 2.8 WAR, he ranks 3rd among FL 1B in that category and is 3rd in batting average and OPS as well. The fact that Barral doesn't lead the league in any stat as a 1B likely means he'll be left out come final voting but still nice to see the youngster putting together a nice run.

ImageRoss Quicker (8/8/7/5/8 Ratings)
Everything I said about Barral above pretty much applies to Quicker here. Another very solid second season in the big leagues but likely not enough to get over the hump and make the team. A .314/.385/.510 slash line is excellent for a 3B in the league and a 1.7 WAR is nothing to sneeze at either. With Best and Morales stealing the show at 3B this season, Quicker's nice season will likely be an after thought on this team but is a huge piece to the resurgence of the Wolves' offense in 2037.

ImageElroy Hinson (8/7/7/7/9 Ratings)
The Wolves were mocked for the signing of Hinson to start the season. Not sure why exactly considering Hinson has posted a 2.0 WAR thus far and is contention for another All-Star nod. Odds are he'll fall short of making the squad as he ranks 6th in the FL in catching WAR despite being 2nd in the league among qualified catchers in batting average, on-base percentage, RBI, slugging, OPS, and walks. He leads all Frick qualified catchers in runs scored and doubles. Nevertheless, the aging veteran will most likely not be a coaches pick when the final roster is named.
